In second practice, that’s exactly where the three-time Cup champion found himself. Stewart set the midway pace with a speed of 202.122mph (35.62-sec.) after eight laps.
His time stood as the fastest lap of the session. “I loved the new downforce package we raced there in June,” Stewart said.
“I absolutely loved it. We got to drive the cars. We got to make a difference in the car and manipulate things. That is what we have all been wanting.”
Stewart’s only win came in his third start in June 2000 at the two-mile track. In 33 starts, Stewart has 12 top-five finishes and 21 top-10 results. He rolls off 15th on Sunday.
Rookies Ryan Blaney (201.427mph) and Chase Elliott (201.196mph) posted the second and third quickest times, respectively, in single lap runs followed by last June’s winner, Kurt Busch (201.089mph), Kyle Larson (200.932mph) and Martin Truex Jr. (200.848mph).
“It’s a little tight everywhere,” Busch said after completing his 28th lap.
Kevin Harvick (200.792mph) was sixth quick followed by the Hendrick Chevys of Alex Bowman (200.781mph), Jimmie Johnson (200.691mph) and Kasey Kahne (200.669mph).
Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Carl Edwards (200.669mph) and Kyle Busch (200.457mph) rounded out the top 12 — and the only drivers cracking the 200-mile-per-hour-plus range.
Bowman’s 38 laps during practice were the most of the session.
Kyle Busch posted the Best 10 Consecutive Lap Average speed of 199.713mph, followed by Jimmie Johnson (199.578mph), Alex Bowman (199.403mph), Kasey Kahne (198.817mph), Jamie McMurray (198.165mph), Carl Edwards (198.115mph), Chase Elliott (197.939mph), Kevin Harvick (197.802mph), Brad Keselowski (197.462mph) and Clint Bowyer (197.177mph).
