"DARKNESS" FALLS ON TALLADEGA FOR GILLILAND, M&M'S®
CHARLOTTE, NC (April 24, 2007) -- This weekend the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series travels to the Talladega Superspeedway for Sunday's Aaron's 499. Last October, M&M'S® driver David Gilliland clinched his first career NEXTEL Cup Series pole at the 2.66-mile Alabama track, marking the third straight race that the #38 Ford from Robert Yates Racing has held the top starting spot at Talladega.
Returning to the site of his first pole, Gilliland also welcomes the return of M&M'S® Dark Chocolate Candies. In fact, Gilliland made his debut for Team 38 in the M&M'S® Dark Ford last August at Michigan International Speedway. The special paint scheme features the same color purple featured on the packaging for M&M'S® Dark Chocolate Candies as well as "Miss Green," marking her first 'on-track' appearance of 2007.
Quoting M&M'S Driver David Gilliland:
"Our team (Robert Yates Racing) has a great track record at these types of tracks. The fact that the #38 has been on the pole for three straight races really speaks for itself so it's good to get back to a restrictor plate track. The past couple of weeks have been a little tough for our team and it's nice to have a break with this track to look forward to. Hopefully our restrictor plate success will continue this weekend at Talladega and we can take it a step further and go to victory lane."
"We're bringing our car from the Daytona 500 this weekend to run. It was an amazing car down there and after the final lap of the 500 we had some work to do on it but I know that Todd (Parrott, crew chief) and all of the guys have been working hard on it. I'm sure it will be just as good if not better than it was down there in February."
"It's pretty cool to be running the M&M'S Dark scheme again this year. That was the car I drove for my first race for Yates last August and that was a very special day, so it's great to get to see the purple on the car and have Miss Green and Blue riding along with me this weekend. That's one of the reasons why it is so much fun to drive for M&M'S. They believe in fun and it shows with the colorful cars I get to drive so it's something I enjoy and I know the fans do as well."
NOTES OF INTEREST--
2007 NEXTEL All-Star Race is under way! M&M'S Fans will have the opportunity to vote for their driver, David Gilliland, who currently is scheduled to participate in the NEXTEL Open. If Gilliland collects the most votes he will make his fifth consecutive start in the All-Star event, where he finished second one year ago, with a chance at winning the $1 million race prize.
