Dale Jarrett Discusses Racing at Texas
What has made RYR so successful at Texas?
"Well the mile and a half tracks were the bread and butter for our team and organization for a number of years. I know we've only won the one race there but we had run well there prior to that -- finishing second a couple times, and had a great race going in 2002 before we ran out of fuel about halfway through the race and lost a few laps trying to get to pit road. We kind of lost touch with that part of our program since then and really haven't gotten back to where we once were. Elliott (Sadler, teammate) won there in 2004 and that was the year we came the closest to turning our intermediate track program around. I think we can get there again we just have some work to do on our race cars, specifically in the nose and front end of the cars."
Where does Texas rank now as far as offering up competitive races?
"It's funny what seasoning can do to a track. The first couple times we raced there it was pretty tough because it was a one-groove track. It's obviously come a long way and we've seen some pretty good races there and some races that have come down to mere inches as far as who the winner is. It's a great place to race and Eddie (Gosage, TMS President) and his staff do a great job of getting the fans there and excited about NASCAR."
Chassis 54
Chassis 54 is the car with which the #88 UPS Team will compete this weekend at Texas. This is the same car Jarrett raced at Texas last fall when he 12th after starting 29th. Chassis 54 has been raced on time this season and that was at Las Vegas in early March where Jarrett started the race 15th and finished 19th. The 19th-place finish is the car's worst finish to date. The car was raced three times at the end of the 2005 season with finishes of 17th at the season finale in Homestead and 14th at Atlanta in November.
