NEMECHEK EYEING SPECIAL WEEKEND IN TEXAS
FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 1, 2005) -- As the Nextel Cup circuit heads to Texas, the eyes of Joe Nemechek will be focused on a performance that will better his position in the driver point standings.
With three races remaining, the U.S. Army driver currently sits 15th in the standings, 89 points from the coveted 11th position for non-Chase drivers.
"We took a hit last week," said Nemechek, referring to Sunday's race in Atlanta where he lost two positions (from 13th to 15th). "We didn't have a good day in Atlanta, but I do look for a different showing in Texas."
When Nemechek says "different" he means a performance that will have the 01 Army Chevrolet running up front in the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
"The Army car has had some stout efforts in Texas in the past," said Nemechek. "Last year I led a bunch of laps (33) and challenged for the win until a power issue dropped us out of contention. Having a strong engine and a well balanced racecar are paramount for the Texas race."
Nemechek has firsthand knowledge of what it takes to be successful at the 1.5-mile oval. He won the NASCAR Busch Series race there in 2003. His best Cup finish in Texas was fourth in 1998.
While Nemechek returns to a track where he has enjoyed success, he is also returning to a facility where he recently had an inspirational gathering with 75 soldiers from Ft. Hood, Texas, who returned from Iraq.
"I was honored to meet the soldiers from Ft. Hood," said Nemechek. "I know some of them are going to be a the race and this would be a great time to have their Army car in contention for the win."
Nemechek will be even more pumped after witnessing Sunday's U.S. Army prerace pageantry that will include the famed Golden Knights parachute team, the U.S. Army Drill Team and an Apache helicopter flyover.
"It's going to start off as an Army day and hopefully that's the way it's going to end -- with the Army Chevy taking a ride to Victory Lane."
