GORDON SEARCHING FOR "W" IN TEXAS
FORT WORTH, Texas (April 4, 2006) -- For Jeff Gordon, Texas just isn't the same without a "W" Gordon, a four-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion, has previously met the President of the United States of America. But this Sunday he will be in Texas for the Samsung/RadioShack 500 in search of another "w" - his 74th career win and first ever at the 1.5-mile speedway. While Texas Motor Speedway is one of only four tracks where the four-time champion has yet to visit Victory Lane, Gordon has posted four top-five finishes in 10 starts at the venue. Those top fives occurred consecutively from 2001 to 2004, but Gordon slipped to finishes of 15th and 14th in 2005, the first year the track hosted two events during a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season.
"Texas is an important race track for us," Gordon said. "We struggled here last year, and we've been really focused on improving our intermediate track program. "I'm actually looking forward to this race -- not because I think we're going to be great, but because we have things that we're really anxious to try that I believe will help us. "We're very curious to see how this weekend goes. I know this race will answer some questions for us and give us an indication if we're going in the right direction."
Since finishing 26th in the season-opening Daytona 500, Gordon has climbed from 25th in the point standings to seventh. He has three top-five finishes already this season - compared to eight total in 2005 - including a second-place finish at Martinsville Speedway last Sunday.
"While I wasn't happy with our finish (13th) at California Speedway, I was happy with how this DuPont team performed throughout the weekend," Gordon said. "We made the car better during the course of the race, even battling and overcoming electrical issues to salvage a decent finish. "We followed that up with top-fives at Las Vegas and Atlanta, and good runs at Bristol and Martinsville. We had a flat tire early in the Martinsville race, but bounced back to finish second. "Our ability to overcome adversity to post solid finishes is giving us two things you can never have enough of in this sport. "Confidence and momentum." Which could very well lead to another "W" for Team DuPont.
