Mooresville, N.C. (April 14, 2010) -- Terry Cook is anxious to arrive at Texas for this weekend's Samsung Mobile 500 for at least three reasons: the first is he and the Whitney Motorsports team is coming off their first Sprint Cup race in which they were running at the finish, a race in which Cook led a lap, at Phoenix; secondly is Texas is where Cook has more experience than any other in his Camping World Truck Series career and where he earned his first top-ten finish in 1998; and third he's excited at the chance to continue to spread the word about autism awareness by carrying the Autism Speaks logo in front of a large audience.
What can you bring from the Charlotte test to Texas? "First, you have to realize that while Charlotte and Texas might look similar, they are actually two very different tracks and they drive totally different. But they do have enough similarities that the test we had there last month will be a big help. There's enough similarity in the chassis setup and the aerodynamic characteristics that will carry over. During that test we really worked on getting to understand what the car needs with the spoiler versus the wing and that helped out a lot. And there's a big bump going into turn one at Charlotte and a big bump going through the middle of turns one and two at Texas so what we learned to help get us over the bump in Charlotte will help at Texas. We've really stepped up our mile-and-a-half program since Atlanta so we're looking forward to getting out there and showing everyone how well we can do."
What's the most challenging thing about running well at Texas? "I really like racing at Texas. I had my first top ten in a Truck there and have always had some good runs there in the past. The biggest challenge this time will be learning to understand what the car is going to need to get around there. I had it all figured out in the Truck and got up to speed pretty quick in the Nationwide Series car, so I think with Tony Furr and the guys working with us we should have a pretty quick learning curve. That's what Tony brings to the table, he has a lot of knowledge and experience and really helps get us competitive right off the trailer."
Terry at Texas: Terry has made 24 career Camping World Truck Series starts at Texas, with seven top-ten finishes (including his first career series top-ten in June, 1998). His best finish is sixth, twice (October, 1999 and October, 2008). His average start is 15.3 and his average finish is 15.9. He has completed 3,374 of a possible 3,805 competition laps (88.7%) and has led 70 laps. In two Nationwide Series starts, Cook earned a seventh-place and 13th-place starting position.
Racing for Autism Awareness: Cook again will carry the Autism Speaks logo on the hood and TV panel of the No. 46 Dodge this weekend hoping to gain exposure during Autism Awareness Month. "We got some needed exposure during the race at Phoenix and I hope we do the same this weekend in Texas. There are a lot of people in NASCAR who have been touched by autism and my family is included. One in every 110 children is on the autism spectrum and one in every 70 boys is. Our son Cody has made tremendous progress since he was diagnosed and that is the most important part: early intervention. Hopefully we can bring some added awareness out there with that familiar blue puzzle piece on the hood. We hope people want to get informed and get involved and remember that autism speaks and it's time to listen."
