NASCAR Winston Cup

Three weeks ago Ford Motor Company publicly unveiled the 2000 NASCAR Taurus during Fan Appreciation Day at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. That car was designed to give fans an idea of what the new model would look like when it takes the track for the 2000 Daytona 500 in February. Work on the actual race version has continued throughout the summer and Ford Racing Technology Operations Manager for North America Greg Specht provided an update of the car's status on Monday.

GREG SPECHT, Ford Racing Technology Operations Manager -- WHAT'S THE CURRENT TIMETABLE FOR THE 2000 TAURUS? "We have scheduled a track test and wind tunnel test at the end of September with NASCAR. This is about a month later than what we were initially shooting for, but it's just due to circumstances of the teams we're working with -- Penske, Roush and Yates -- have to go to races week to week and there's only so much time they can spend on the 2000 Taurus. Yeah, we'd like to have this done sooner than later, but it's not by anyone's design or desire, it's just due to circumstances."

ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH WHERE THINGS ARE RIGHT NOW SO TEAMS WON'T FACE A SIMILAR CRUNCH LIKE THE FIRST TIME AROUND? "Yeah, because the changes are minimal enough. It's not like what GM just did in rolling out the new Monte Carlo, which is a totally new car from the ground up. And it's certainly not like when we switched from the Thunderbird to the Taurus and everybody had to cut all of the sheetmetal off their cars and hang new bodies. This is going to be a front and rear fascia and a hood."

HOW MUCH FURTHER AHEAD FROM A DEVELOPMENT STANDPOINT IS FORD THIS TIME? "We've got 75 percent of the car nailed down already because it's carryover from last year's car. Whereas, when we brought out the new Taurus is was like starting from ground zero. NASCAR has been extremely supportive and helpful through this entire process and we've kept them up to speed on where we're at in the development process."
