Tony Stewart, Danica Patrick in Pocono wreck

A much-needed strong run by Tony Stewart was derailed Monday in an accident that also collected his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate, Danica Patrick.

On a restart on Lap 93 of 160, Stewart’s No. 14 Chevrolet appeared to get very loose while being split by cars on both the inside (Ricky Stenhouse Jr.) and outside (Kyle Larson). As he drifted back, he ran into Patrick’s 10 Chevrolet.

Patrick, who restarted 16th,  also made contact with the No. 38 Ford of Landon Cassill after the initial incident with Stewart.

“Car’s killed,” Stewart radioed to his team immediately after the wreck.

Stewart had been running in the Top 10 the entire race and enjoyed his best qualifying effort of the season (sixth) for Monday’s rain-delayed Axalta 500 at Pocono Raceway.

Stewart, who missed the first eight races of the season with a back injury, needs to be in the top 30 of driver points by the 26th race of the season in order to have any chance to qualify for this season’s championship Chase.

Stewart declined to speak to the media after exiting the infield care center.

Patrick remained on the track after pitting for repairs but several laps later, she also pulled into the garage as the damage to her car was too severe to repair on pit road.

Patrick ended up finishing 32nd while Stewart finished 34th.
