Trickle to try difficult triple
NAZARETH, Pa. (May 13, 1998) It will be a difficult task, but veteran driver Dick Trickle will race the Heilig-Meyers Ford Taurus in the Winston Open and hopefully, The Winston on Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway and then fly to Nazareth Speedway on Sunday to run the Schneider National Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the First Union 200, a NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division event.
Trickle will need the help of versatile journeyman Curtis Markham to practice and set up his No. 64 NASCAR Busch Series car on Saturday on the unique one-mile Pennsylvania oval.
Although Trickle, 56, has attended all of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series races and all of the NASCAR Busch Series races this year, this will be the first time in 1998 he has had to be at two different tracks in the same weekend.
"There certainly isn't a lot of free time during these types of weekends," Trickle said. "I'm used to spreading myself thin because racing is something I really enjoy. Everyone wants to be in The Winston, and I don't want to miss an opportunity to drive the strong cars the Schneider National team has been putting under me."
Because his NASCAR Winston Cup commitments at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday and Saturday, Trickle will not qualify the No. 64 Schneider National Chevrolet for the First Union 200. As a result, Trickle will have to jump into the driver's seat at the back of the pack after Markham runs the car in Bud Pole Qualifying.
Last year, Markham drove the No. 64 car in New Hampshire and finished 12th. He also helped the Shoemaker Racing team in Indianapolis by qualifying the car while Trickle was unable to attend because of a NASCAR Winston Cup conflict with the Brickyard 400.
"Curtis has done a superb job for us in the past events, and I'm sure he will do a great job for us this weekend," said Dennis Shoemaker, owner of the Schneider National Chevrolet.
Markham has 68 career starts in the NASCAR Busch Series with one career Bud Pole at South Boston Speedway in July 1995.
Television coverage of the Winston Open and The Winston will begin Saturday at 7 p.m. (ET) on TNN. The First Union 200 from Nazareth Speedway can be seen a 1 p.m. (ET) on ESPN.
