Truex tops opening Las Vegas practice

Brad Keselowski was second with a lap of 192.995mph, followed by Jimmie Johnson (192.988mph), Kyle Larson (192.719mph) and Matt Kenseth (192.644mph) rounded out the top five. The three NASCAR champions — Keselowski, Johnson and Kenseth — have won nine of the lasts 14 races at the 1.5-mile track.

Kasey Kahne, Ryan Blaney, Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top 10 on the speed chart. Kyle Busch’s 27 laps were the most completed during the exercise.

After the first 30 minutes, Hamlin led the way with a speed of 191.083mph (28.214-sec) following three laps. Truex Jr. moved to the top spot moments later with a lap of 191.428mph (28.209-sec) on his second of three laps.

At the 50-minute mark, Blaney jumped to the top of the speed chart with a lap of 191.823mph (28.151-sec). Less than five minutes later, his Penske teammate — and last weekend’s winner, Keselowski — surpassed Blaney with a lap of 191.891mph (28.141-sec).

Truex Jr. posted the quick lap 69-minutes into the 85-minute session with a lap of 193.500mph (27.907-sec). While there was a mad dash of drivers who attempted to top Truex’s time, no driver was successful in knocking off the No. 78 Toyota.

There were no major incidents during the session.
