NASCAR Fans Mail List
Chevy's Outraged by Ford's Dominance
It seems that the Ford's finishes have finally got to the GM contingant. Here are some of the comments after the race. ``They need to give those Fords a little more,'' Dale Earnhardt said. ``They're not dominant enough.'' Since the Fords got an additional quarter-inch of spoiler before the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway last month, Fords have taken 16 of the possible 20 top-five spots in the past four races. ``They gave the Fords the spoiler and they were dominant,'' Petty said Sunday. ``They took it away and they were just another race car with a bunch of cry-babies driving them because they all whined about it. Then they gave it back to them and they're all heroes again.'' ``It has been proved time and time again that they have better aerodynamics,'' said Bill Davis, owner of Ward Burton's No. 22 Pontiac. ``I don't know why they're wasting money going to wind tunnels. . . . Stevie Wonder could see the problem. Anybody could watch the race today and see what was going on.''
Post Race Engine Testing?
After the race, Bill Elliott's Ford and the Chevrolets of Gordon and Earnhardt had the horsepower numbers checked by NASCAR." There is no word on the results. Bobby Hutchens, Earnhardt's engineer, said that the test would be interesting: ''This is a high RPM track, and it's probably harder on the valve train here than anywhere we go.''
Mike Skinner and Geoff Bodine
Mike Skinner was hot for two reasons after his car went out after eight laps. Skinner felt Geoff Bodine had cut him off, causing Skinner to spin. His Chevrolet went rear end-first into the wall and caught fire. Skinner escaped with the help of the track's fire crew. ``That's the kind of move you might expect a guy to make at the end of a race,'' said Skinner, who gestured angrily when Bodine passed by on the ensuing caution
NASCAR Announcements
NASCAR Officials may be announcing the 1998 Winston Cup tour schedule earlier than expected this summer, because car owners will need to brace their sponsors for another $500,000 increase in sponsorship fees. There will be three new races added to next year's schedule, according to NASCAR sources, for a total of 35 regular-season points events, in addition to the Busch Clash, the Winston All-Star race and the Suzuka exhibition. It's unclear where the new races will be, but two of the three could be at Roger Penske's California Speedway and Bruton Smith's Texas Motor Speedway, and the third could be in early March at Las Vegas Speedway.
Bruton's Smith
Bruton Smith's Proposed November stock-car race at Texas could be an ARCA race, according to NASCAR sources. That would make the event more 'politically correct.' However, NASCAR's Bill France has been talking privately with several Winston Cup team owners to ensure they don't plan to run in any second Texas race, according to some teams. Meanwhile, Ken Squire, who handles television production at a number of NASCAR events, says a Suzuka-Texas doubleheader would make for a good TV package if France and Smith would agree to it.
