W. Burton continues new beginning with Kentucky Speedway test: veteran driver breaks in new Haas CNC race team.
Ward Burton and his new No. 0 Netzero Pontiac team continued their new beginning with a one-day test at Kentucky Speedway today.
Burton joins Haas CNC Racing after ending a seven-season relationship with Bill Davis Racing just two days ago. Davis helped Burton earned two of his five career wins last season, including the Daytona 500 title.
"I feel like I've just been dropped out of the nest and have just found the wings," Burton said. "It was very stressful for me to leave the Caterpillar team, but it was just something that was beyond my control."
He becomes the fourth pilot of the Netzero machine this season. Jack Sprague began the year with the team but departed after 18 races. Since, John Andretti and Jason Leffler have spent short stints with the team.
Today's test is Burton's second with Crew Chief Tony Furr. The veteran driver said the more the team works together, the more confidence it builds.
""I haven't worked with Tony before but have come real close at times in the past. Being loyal to 'BD' kept me at home," Burton said. "We actually tested a little bit at Atlanta last week, but coming here adds some confidence for all of us. The car feels real good and we're making a lot of changes because of the things we're learning about each other."
He applauded his new crew for its positive attitude and ability to work as a team.
"I'm really excited. The more I'm around these guys in the shop and at the racetrack, the more excited I become. The thing I like so much about it is the willingness to work together, particularly among Tony and the engineers. We want to make it work really badly.
"They've got the resources, they've got the people in place and they're letting me be part of everything thing they're doing, whether it's building the cars we'll take to Daytona or getting ready for Atlanta this weekend. I'm really pumped up and am getting more excited as the days pass. I really feel very strongly that this will be the last team I drive for."
Burton enters this weekend's Atlanta race 21st in the series standings after scoring four top-10 finishes this season. He has earned a total of five wins, 24 top-five and 79 top-10 finishes to date during his 10-year NASCAR Winston Cup Series career.
Fellow circuit drivers Jimmie Johnson, Jeremy Mayfield and Bill Elliott also tested at the track.
