A late race miscue by driver Dale Jarrett sent the top-ten car of Rusty Wallace into the wall and into a 30th place finish, but Wallace is more irritated with Team DEI than Jarrett. The 88 and the 2 were racing for position at lap 295, when Jarrett got into the rear of Wallace coming off turn four.
Wallace smacked the wall, completely decimating the front end of the No. 2 Penske Dodge. Wallace brought the car down pit road, who furiously attempted to pull out enough of the sheet metal to allow Wallace to continue. The crew accomplished their goal, by jumping up and down on the hood until it appeared drivable. Wallace got back onto the race track, finishing a disappointing 30th.
"He (Dale Jarrett) just got into my rear end coming off turn four," said Jarrett. "I don't know what happened, but it was just tight racing and it was getting late in the race. I was looking in my rear view mirror and I was getting held up by the No. 8 car that was two laps down. I don't know if he was blocking for his teammate or what. We kept trying to move him out of the way, and he wouldn't get out of the way. Michael (Waltrip) got underneath me and I thought I was OK there. Then the 88 got into me. That was uncharacteristic of Dale, so I don't have a problem with that.
"He's a good guy and I know he just made a mistake. Those other guys, I don't know about that."
Jarrett suffered minimal damage on the Robert Yates Racing No. 88 Ford, and finished ninth.
"I'll go tell him I am sorry," commented Jarrett. "That doesn't do any good because I've been on the end of that, but I wasn't trying to get into him. I wasn't concerned about making a pass on him as much as I was concerned about just running and trying to stay in front of the 9 (Kasey Kahne).
"I don't know if I just got aggressive or if he didn't get in the gas, but, anyway, I touched him. That wasn't what I wanted to do, but, unfortunately, it happened."
Currently, both veteran drivers sit outside of the top ten in points. Jarrett is 12th, 629 points out of first. Wallace is 19th, 812 markers behind leader, Jimmie Johnson.
