Waltrip's Darlington effort to focus on Flock
HARRISBURG, N.C. (March 18, 1998) Three-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip will utilize this weekend's TranSouth Financial 400 at Darlington Raceway to increase awareness of the difficulties facing fellow NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Tim Flock as he battles lung and liver cancer.
"Tim Flock is one of the pioneers who laid the foundation upon which our sport is built," Waltrip said. "Tim and his family are going through some very, very tough times and the racing community must be made aware that they need our help.
"I want to challenge the drivers, team owners and everyone in the racing community to step up and financially help Tim and his family during these difficult times. Winston Cup racing is often referred to as one big family and when one of our family members is in trouble, we need to pull together."
During the TranSouth Financial 400 weekend, Waltrip's Chevrolet will be painted white and carry the No. 300-reminiscent of the cars Flock drove to many of his 40 career victories during the 1950s. The words "Tim Flock Special" will adorn the rear quarter panels and NASCAR's 50th Anniversary logo will be on the hood.
"Tim competed in 187 Winston Cup races during his 13-year driving career, earning a total of $109,656," Waltrip said. "Our goal this weekend is to generate at least that much in contributions to help Tim and his family pay their mounting medical bills."
Waltrip indicated that die-cast replicas of the No. 300 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and other memorabilia featuring Flock's name and car number will be produced with proceeds going directly to the Flock family.
Contributions to aid Flock and his family can be made to the following funds:
Tim Flock Medical Fund Attn: Kim Troutman NationsBank 8551 U.S. Highway 29 North Charlotte, NC 28262
Or
Tim Flock Trust Fund c/o First Union P.O. Box 184 Harrisburg, NC 28075
