This Week in Ford Racing
October 12, 2010
Colin Braun, driver of the No. 16 Con-Way Freight Ford Mustang at this weekend's Nationwide Dollar General 300 in Charlotte, is heavily involved in the Ford Driving Skills for Life program, promoting teen driver safety. Braun took time out to talk about next week's National Teen Safe Driving Week as well as his upcoming race in Charlotte, the final race of the season for the Mustang NASCAR Nationwide car
NEXT WEEK IS NATIONAL TEEN SAFE DRIVING WEEK. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU TO BE A PART OF THE FORD DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE PROGRAM AND EDUCATING TEENS ON HOW TO DRIVE SAFELY? "Since car crashes are the number one killer of teenagers, it is important for me to be a part of a program to help save the lives of teenage drivers and try to make a difference. It is a great thing to be involved in because it is something that I believe in and want to try to make a difference in. I think next week would be a great time for teenagers and parents of teenagers to make a trip over to DrivingSkillsForLife.com and learn more about all the things that they can do out on the roads to promote safe driving and save some lives in the process."
YOU HIT THE TRACK IN CHARLOTTE THIS WEEKEND. ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT RACING IN CHARLOTTE? "Yeah, I really am. I am really excited to go to Charlotte and race the new Mustang. It is such a cool car to drive and we have had really good success with it in all three races so far. I ran really well in Michigan with the Mustang and had a really good day with a top-10 finish, so I am really excited to get back in the Mustang at Charlotte. It is one of my favorite race tracks to race at, so I am really pumped up about it."
THIS IS THE LAST RACE OF THE SEASON FOR MUSTANG BEFORE GOING FULL TIME NEXT YEAR, WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE? "I am definitely excited to have it full time next year. For me, this Mustang fits my driving style that worked so well for me in the Truck Series. I really enjoy racing the Mustang and am really looking forward to having it next year. I think it will be a lot of fun. It has been sad having it only in four races this year because it has been such a great car and I have enjoyed it so much."
YOU POSTED A TOP-10 FINISH AT MICHIGAN. WHAT CAN YOU TAKE FROM MICHIGAN TO CHARLOTTE? "I think they compare a little bit. They are both what we call intermediate tracks. There are a lot of things we learned at Michigan in regard to what these cars need to be fast at the end of a run that we can take to Charlotte. I think we can take what we know from there and apply it to get more speed out of the car. I know the guys at Roush Fenway have been working really hard at the shop to get the cars a little quicker and drive a little better. It is cool on one hand when you only have four races with these cars because you have the time to go back and really work on making them better and faster. I am excited to get out there and see how all the hard work pays off."
YOU WILL RACE THIS WEEKEND WITH A NEW CREW CHIEF, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THAT TRANSITION PROCESS AND WHAT IT HAS BEEN LIKE? "It is tough when you have a new crew chief. You have to try to get on the same page and when you swap in the middle of the year you have to get caught up quickly. My new crew chief and I, Chad Norris, have had a lot of conversations together and had a lot of dinners where we have sat and just talked about things that work for me and don't work for me, just trying to bring him up to speed. We have talked about what has worked and what hasn't and tried to get him up to speed quickly. It is a challenge. We are thrown into the fire a little bit because we can't wait and try to figure things out, we have to get after it right away. From one standpoint it is cool to have a new voice and on the other end it is tough work."
