Yellow Freight 300 Friday notebook By Shawn A. Akers

HAMPTON, Ga. (March 12, 1999) Some notes and quotes Friday surrounding Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division Yellow Freight 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway:

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding this year's NASCAR Busch Series is the plight of Hermie Sadler. A full-time participant in the series since 1993, Sadler carried a streak of 140 consecutive starts coming into the 1999 campaign, but has already missed three of the four events.

The string was broken at Daytona, but the No. 72 Parker Racing team bounced back and finished 25th in the ALLTEL 200 at Rockingham the following week. The following race at Las Vegas, however, the team went home again, and Friday, Sadler failed to make the 43-car field once again for the Yellow Freight 300.

Sadler's younger brother, Elliott, will start Saturday's race from the fourth position. The NASCAR Winston Cup Series rookie is substituting for the injured Andy Santerre in the No. 47 Monro Muffler and Brakes Chevrolet.

Another familiar car that will be absent from the Yellow Freight 300 is the No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet of Brewco Motorsports, with driver Kevin Grubb. On Thursday, Grubb hit the wall coming out of Turn 3 during Bud Pole Qualifying and failed to complete his lap.

On Friday, Grubb's Bud Second-Round Qualifying lap wasn't good enough to get him in the field, and the team didn't have a provisional to rely upon.

The No. 29 Chevrolet of Diamond Ridge Motorsports will start Saturday's race from the outside of Row 21, with Curtis Markham behind the wheel. Markham took over the seat for Ted Musgrave for second-round qualifying, but his lap wasn't good enough to make the top 36.

Markham and the team used a provisional to get into the field.

The other Diamond Ridge Motorsports driver, Jeff Purvis, has had his problems qualifying this season, and Thursday and Friday were certainly no exception. The driver of the No. 4 Lance Snacks Chevrolet will use his second straight provisional and third overall this season in four races, and will start 41st Saturday.

Purvis also used provisionals at Daytona for the season opener and Las Vegas last week.

Mark Martin, who will start from the third position on Saturday, is going for his third straight NASCAR Busch Series victory at Atlanta. Martin won last year's Stihl 300 after starting from the 10th position.

In 1997, he qualified 13th before taking the checkered flag. Roush Racing drivers have won the past two NASCAR Busch Series races, at Rockingham and at Las Vegas.

Tony Raines, the driver of the No. 74 BACE Motorsports Chevrolet, leads the NASCAR Busch Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings heading into Saturday's race.

Raines, who'll start 37th, has 261 points, followed by Adam Petty with 226, Kerry Earnhardt with 192, Hank Parker Jr. with 185 and Bobby Hamilton Jr. with 155.
