Barrett, McGill look towards three straight NASCAR Busch races against Cup drivers, teams

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Every race is important but some become especially important, and as far as driver Stanton Barrett and his DCT Motorsports teammates are concerned, the next few weeks are going to be very big races in the NASCAR Busch Series.

"Running three straight weeks in conjunction with the Cup guys means we're going to have some extra names in there," said Barrett. The series runs Friday night at Daytona Beach, Fla., then follows with consecutive races at Joliet, Ill., and Loudon, N.H.

"I don't mind running with the Cup guys. In fact, it's a lot of fun. It adds a new element and it's the type of thing that makes me a better driver," he said. "But it adds a new 'crucialness' to these races, especially to the guys who are fighting for points."

Barrett is 19th in the NASCAR Busch Series standings but is in the thick of the very tight 10th-20th spot in the national points. He is just over 100 points out of 12th, mathematically well within one race of picking up seven positions.

"I can see why the fans like it and, from a fan's standpoint, it does add a new element, something different from any other sport," said DCT Motorsports owner John McGill. "It would be like the Cleveland Indians' Triple-A team playing the New York Yankees' Triple-A team, but four or five major league players slide down for that one game. It's great for the fans that are there . . . but I'm not sure how good it is for the two Triple-A teams."

The addition of teams and drivers unconcerned with points adds a new element, Barrett said.

"In most ways, it doesn't change a thing. You are running as hard as you can and doing the best you can, working for the best finish you can get," Barrett said. "Still, it adds that element that a guy might take a chance a driver running for points wouldn't take. You have to know who you are racing with, and you have to be ready for them.

"For a single race, it's great having some Cup guys running. You don't get better unless you are competing against people who are highly talented," he continued. "From that standpoint, it's great. I just wish there was a better way to figure points around the ones running partial schedules."

McGill, who owns DCT Motorsports with his wife Nancy, is the only full-time owner in the history of any of NASCAR's top three series from Cleveland. The team offers a variety of unique sponsorship scenarios for corporations. McGill has developed sponsorship packages that could incorporate the full remainder of the season or blocks of races. Utilizing his own business and marketing acumen, he brings creative and fresh approaches not just to team sponsorship itself but areas such as hospitality, cross-promotions and business-to-business possibilities.

Barrett is not only a veteran NASCAR driver but is an award-winning Hollywood stunt man, whose most recent work will appear in the movie, Dukes Of Hazzard, due to be released Aug. 5. Barrett has appeared in over 125 movies, as well as hundreds of television shows and commercials, and has been competing in stock car racing since his late teens.
