BRISTOL, TN (August 22, 2003) - In the Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway, Yellow Racing proved that it has the makings of a championship contender. The team brought one of the strongest cars to the high-banked short track Friday night and then displayed the focus and teamwork to post its 18th top-15 finish this season.
In a race riddled with accidents and 13 cautions, Jamie McMurray, with the help of his spotter, did an amazing job of staying out of trouble. Although he was involved in a spin on the backstretch, McMurray was able to keep the car safe from damage and recover lost positions. Team Yellow went on to finish the extremely competitive race in 12th place. Michael Waltrip won the race; Ron Hornaday, Jr. was second and Ted Musgrave finished third.
"Wow, did I have to work for this tonight," driver Jamie McMurray said. "The team gave me an outstanding car, which is so important at a track like Bristol where so much can happen so quickly. After I got spun on the backstretch, I was in 21st place. If I hadn't had one of the best cars tonight, there is no way that I could have safely driven to a 12th place finish. I am so proud to be a part of a team that puts quality cars on the track each race and just never gives up."
Car Chief Jon Wolfe said, "It's always a bit nerve wracking to come to Bristol. This is good old short track racing where you have to have split-second reflexes. The crew had two really good pit stops, and Jamie just drove the heck out of the car. I am really proud of the entire No. 1 Yellow Racing team and what they have accomplished here tonight."
Earlier in the week, Yellow Racing drivers Jamie McMurray and David Stremme flew to Columbus, Ohio for the American Trucking Association National Truck Driving Championships. While there, the teammates had the opportunity to make friends with twenty of the top Yellow driving professionals whose names were featured on the #1 race car Friday night. They were also able to witness first hand that determination, quality, and safety are a large part of what makes a champion.
After meeting and signing autographs for the Yellow drivers (all state truck driving champions) and their families, both drivers took a turn behind the wheel of a Yellow tractor and trailer. They competed on the driving skills course that the Yellow drivers would soon face.
While neither posted Grand Champion level points, McMurray and Stremme decided that their different driving styles complemented one another quite well. If given the job of driving the Yellow Racing transporter to an upcoming race, they thought that working together, they'd get the #1 car to the track on-time and undamaged.
Team Yellow Racing returns this week to Darlington, site of an early-season second-place finish resulting from a last-lap bump by Todd Bodine. With Bodine out of Busch Series competition, Yellow Racing will be looking to stay safe from a dreaded Darlington stripe and improve its position in the owner's championship standings.
The Winn Dixie 200 presented by PepsiCo will be held on Saturday, August 30; Jamie McMurray will be behind the wheel. The race will air live on NBC and be broadcast on MRN beginning at 2:00 p.m. EDT. Qualifying for the event will take place Friday, August 29 at 1:35 p.m. EDT and will be aired on the Speed Channel.
