"The Grainger Ford Taurus was pretty good
right out of the trailer when we got here. It was pretty much the same
setup we ran in the spring race and just made a few minor adjustments to
it, but the race fired off really well. Jeff Burton was just a little
bit better than we were. We were a tick loose and then it started to go
a little bit tight toward the end of that run and we didn't make any
adjustments on the second set of tires and then it got really tight. I
was having trouble keeping it on the bottom. Buckshot Jones got in the
back of me down there trying to get his lap back and I lost a bunch of
positions, but we were able to get back going again. I was really,
really tight that run. I got in the turn four wall coming up off the
corner a little bit. That kind of hurt the car right toward the end of
that tire run and then the last set of tires we loosened it up. I think
everybody's about tight and then that last run it was really coming to
me. It was still a little tighter than I wanted it, but it was racy fast
and I could still go pretty good. The pit stops were great all day and
then I got by Burton. He let me go there because I was a little bit
better than he was. Trying to catch the 17, I could get up on him but
then I would just get so aero-tight anytime I'd get close to him. I'd
fall back four or five car lengths and get a run on him again, and just
get up there and get tight again. I couldn't wiggle him or loosen him
up. The 87 was probably holding him up a little bit. These cars, even
though you've got eight to 10 car lengths in front of you, it disturbs
that air to the nose and they don't run as well. The 87 pulled out of
the way and then the 17 kind of took off. I had a hard time catching
him, but then he started getting tight leaving the corner I think. We
passed a lapped car with about four to go in three and four and we both
had to go to the high groove. My car just stuck like a bandit in the
top. I got right up behind Matt and took the air off of him. He got big
loose and I could have tried to take advantage of that situation, but
couldn't. That indicated to me that my car was good at that top. I
can't do anything with him at the bottom, I'm gonna have to try the top.
I got a good run through one and two and I was on his bumper going into
three and four and that was to my advantage. When he peeled off to the
bottom, I stayed in the top groove. He probably saw me up there and
tried to hustle it and got up through the throttle and got it loose on
the bottom. He came up right in front me and I got out of the throttle
and I just took the air off of him because I was right there already.
There wasn't any saving it. I got on the brakes and tried to get down
away from him, but he got turned around. I feel bad because he's my
teammate. I'm just thankful I didn't touch him because I would have felt
terrible. It was just a great run and the top was gonna work for me down
there, I was pretty sure of it. Even if Matt would have been able to
keep it on the bottom, I think I would have been even with him coming off
four and would have at least been running beside him in one and two. It
would have been an exciting last two laps if we wouldn't have spun,
that's for sure."
DID YOU THINK YOU WERE CRASHING IN FOUR WHEN BUCKSHOT TAPPED YOU? "Absolutely. Jack called him, 'looking inside' and then Jack said, 'He's kind of in there,' and then he ran into me. I left him a groove on the bottom, but the characteristic of getting in that corner is the car pushes and he probably just pushed up into my right-rear quarterpanel and turned me a little bit. I don't think it was intentional, at least I hope not. I gathered it back up and everything was fine. It was a rough day altogether coming here and racing. The whole weekend with what happened. I was good friends with Blaise Alexander and our whole team is thinking about him and his family. I dedicate this win to him. It's just an unfortunate things that's going on."
