Benson wins Charlotte challenge race By Shawn A. Akers

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 2, 1998) Johnny Benson, driving in his first NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division event since 1995, came all the way from the 17th position and took the lead in the final few laps to edge Dave Rezendes for the top spot in the All Pro Bumper to Bumper Challenge Race. The 40-lap race determined the final eight starting spots in Saturday's All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The 1995 NASCAR Busch Series champion, driving a No. 26 Staff America Chevrolet fielded by BACE Motorsports, started on the inside of row nine. He avoided several crashes to win the race, the final one of its kind ever to be run at Charlotte. The top-eight finishers qualified for Saturday's race, which gets under way shortly after 1 p.m. EDT.

Benson, Rezendes, Sterling Marlin, Mike Wallace, Casey Atwood, Shane hall, Jeff Fuller and Jason Keller all secured spots for Saturday's race. Keller barely edged Bobby Hillin Jr. at the line for the eighth and final position.

Steve Grissom, driving the No. 59 Kingsford/Matchlight Chevrolet, received a past champion's provisional will start Saturday's event from the 43rd position. Rich Bickle qualified the No. 59 Chevrolet on Friday in the absence of the injured Robert Pressley, the regular driver of the car, but team owners decided to put Grissom in the car for Friday's race.

As is often the case, the attrition rate was high for the short event. There were four cautions, with laps under caution not counting. There were three lead changes among four drivers.

Those not qualifying for Saturday's race were Hillin, Patty Moise, Toby Porter, Ashton Lewis, Kelly Denton, Jeff Green, Lance Hooper, Jim Bown, Jason Jarrett, Lyndon Amick, Kevin Grubb, Kerry Earnhardt, Matt Hutter, Wayne Grubb and Andy Santerre.
