RICHMOND, Va., (Sept. 8, 1999) - Old Dominion. Southside. Martinsville. If you ever attended a NASCAR Winston Racing Series event at any one of these Virginia tracks, chances are you know who Curtis Markham is. You either saw him race (and more often than not win), or you read of his records by flipping through the pages of each track's program. On Thursday, Markham returns to his hometown and short track roots when he attempts to qualify the No. 29 Husqvarna Chevrolet for Friday night's Autolite Platinum 250 at Richmond International Raceway. The race marks a homecoming for Markham, who raced and won on the old Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway back in his Late Model Stock days. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Markham terrorized the Late Model Stock ranks of the Winston Racing Series. At any track he visited, Markham was a threat to win - a feat he accomplished 87 times. As he amassed wins, he amassed track championships. Markham is a two-time track champion at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Va., (1984 and 1985) and a two-time track champion at Richmond's Southside Speedway (1984 and 1986). He also holds the record for most Late Model wins at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway with four. "I've got a lot of fans in Richmond," said Markham. "I love the race track. When I was growing up, Richmond was the place to run. "The fans around the Richmond area - they are race fans. People in the '80s and early '90s who were coming to Southside and Old Dominion; they were good to me then and they've always been good to me. It's going to feel like old times when they introduce me. Hopefully, somebody will clap!" Husqvarna, also a sponsor of Joe Gibbs Racing and the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Pontiac in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, has stepped up to sponsor Markham for the Richmond event. "We conduct a great deal of business in Richmond and the commonwealth of Virginia," said Dave Zerfoss, president, Husqvarna. "We're proud to be a part of Joe Gibbs Racing and their new relationship with Diamond Ridge Motorsports."
