Compton Captures Second Top-10 of Season
Wayward lug nut foils top-five finish
Darlington, S.C. (March 18, 2002) -- Stacy Compton and the No.59 Kingsford/Johnsonville Chevrolet team captured their second top-10 finish this season - a lug nut away from crossing the finish line with top-five honors at Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series Darlingtonraceway 200.com.
Compton started the race 13th on the grid, patiently working his way through the field, avoiding mishaps and staying in pit stop sequence with race leaders. On lap 131 of the 147-lap event, a caution flag flew when Randy LaJoie pounded the frontstretch wall.
With cars thin on rubber and short on gas, the field headed for pit road for what they knew would be the last pit stop of the day. Compton was fifth coming off the track with his sights set on making a run at the leader. During the stop a lug nut fell off, forcing the team to use up precious seconds. Compton returned to the track in 14th and drove the car hard to get back into the top-10.
"We had a great car again this weekend," reflected Compton after the race. "I guess we had a lug nut problem on the last stop. Those things happen and I know the guys practice pit stops every week to be the best that they can be. We win as a team and we lose as a team. I'm sure the next late race stop we have will be lightening fast."
The "Lady in Black" lived up to her reputation, eliminating 18 of the 43 competitors and allowing only 13 the opportunity to finish the race on the lead lap. Jeff Burton defied the track's reputation going wire-to-wire for the win.
Compton moved up to 11th in the point standings with his tenth-place finish at Darlington.
