Richmond, VA. (May 7, 2001) -- Another on-track altercation forced David Donohue to have a 36th place finish during Friday nights race at Richmond International Speedway. On lap 112 of the Hardee's 200, Jeff Purvis was fighting a loose race car and got into the No. 25 Team Marines Chevrolet, sending it into the wall and giving the crew some added challenges.
Although a discouraging mishap, the commitment of each crewmember was once again clearly evident as they began work on the right front of the car, replacing the upper control arm, sway bar heim joint and shock. After 10 minutes of dedicated teamwork, Donohue was sent back into the race 48 laps behind where he was.
"We somewhat finished another race, but were many laps down. I really thought we had a bit of luck for a while. I was able to avoid some wrecks and we were looking pretty good," Donohue explained. "I praise the guys for all the hard work they put in getting me back on the track so quick. Their efforts were phenomenal."
According to Donohue, the car was loose at the start of the race. The rookie driver did his best to hold the leaders as he patiently awaited his crew chief's command to pit and have adjustments made to tighten the car up. When the word to pit came, the crew changed tires, pulled a spring rubber and made an air pressure adjustment. It all seemed to work, but Donohue didn't have the opportunity to show Team Marines potential.
"The car ran good even after the repairs were made. We came into the pits a few more times and continued working on making the car better -- and it was. As we test more and I get familiar with the cars, I'm positive we'll be marching to the front."
Donohue spoke to students at L.C. Byrd High School on Wednesday. The opportunity was given to those interested in displaying their strength and determination on the chin up bar. Many were receptive to Donohue and the Marine Corps' values.
Team Marines' next venture will be the New Hampshire International Speedway. The Busch 200 will be aired Saturday, May 12th at 1:00 p.m. on FX.
