Miraculous ride delivers Compton's 6th top ten finish.
DAYTONA, FL. (July 5, 2002) - It took several miraculous events, but Stacy Compton and the Kingsford/Johnsonville Chevy delivered a top ten finish at Daytona International Speedway on Friday night.
The wild weekend started on Wednesday night, when Compton's 6th place qualifying time was disallowed by NASCAR for a shock absorber rules infraction. "The rules allow for three small bleed holes in each of the shocks," explained Crew Chief Steve Plattenberger. "One of our bleed holes was a half a thousandth of a millimeter too small. NASCAR does an excellent job of inspecting these cars and enforcing the rules. Unfortunately, our oversight cost us tonight." The resulting penalty forced Compton to start the race in 37th place.
As expected, the move to the back put Compton and his car in peril throughout the remainder of the race. On three separate occasions, large accidents in front of Compton left him nowhere to go. Miraculously, on each occasion, a small hole appeared and allowed Compton to continue on unscathed. When all of the smoke settled at the end of the night, Compton was left with a hard-earned 10th place finish.
After the race Compton reflected, "I'd like to take credit for getting through all of those wrecks tonight, but when you are running as fast and as close together as we are at Daytona it's next to impossible to dodge the bullet. We missed not one, not two, but three wrecks tonight and I've got to thank the Good Lord for keeping us safe. It was a wild one and I'm not sure that I want to watch the replays from our in-car camera. Living through that race once was enough for me."
The finish gives the team more top tens in the first half on the 2002 season than they had all of last year, and leaves Compton in 10th place in the Driver's standings - a mere 133 points out of fifth place. The team will try to improve on its new top ten streak at Chicagoland Speedway this weekend.
Joe Nemecek won the race in dominant fashion, his first win of the 2002 season.
