DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 19) -- REESE'S Racing driver Kevin Harvick and the Take 5 team drove the No. 21 Chevy TAKE 5 Chevrolet to a second second-place finish at Daytona International Speedway for in the Hershey's Take TAKE 5 300. Today was Harvick's, scoring his sixth consecutive top-10 finish at Daytona in the Busch Series. Harvick finished runner-up to Tony Stewart, who drove a car Harvick owns. in the No. 33 owned by Kevin Harvick Inc.
"I have no idea where the 33 came from," said Harvick. "But if anyone passed me it would be okay if it was the 33 or the 2."
Harvick started the Hershey's Take TAKE 5 300 in the 7th seventh spot behind Clint Bowyer, his teammate from Richard Childress Racing Clint Bowyer. With only 19 laps in the books, Harvick radioed to tell his team that the car was just too tight, or hard to steer in the corners. When the first caution period began flew, Harvick took the No. 21 Take TAKE 5 Chevrolet came to pit road for four tires and a slight wedge adjustment to help make the car looser, or easier to steer in the corners free up the car. With an unusually slow stop caused Harvick lost three positions on pit road.
Harvick quickly got his position back improved his position with the help of a few drafting partners, and he moved up forward to into the second spot by lap 34. Kevin Harvick once again radioed to told crew chief Rick Viers that the car was still just too tight, and he could not hold the car on the bottom of the track. At this point in the race, Harvick found himself in the 12th spot and quickly losing ground.
On lap 100 of 120, the third caution flag of the day flew over the speedway. This would be the third and final pit stop for the No. 21 Chevy TAKE 5 team. They The team made a slight air pressure adjustment and another wedge adjustment to see if the car would respond to the to help Harvick hold the car on the bottom of the track changes. Harvick advanced five spots to third place, as the team executed its fastest pit stop of the day. Harvick confirmed on the two-way radio the adjustments made were the solution to the problem.During this stop his crew made up for the mistakes from earlier, which helped him move up five spots into third. Viers was certain these adjustments had finally loosened the car up when Harvick radioed to the team that he was "wide open."
On the final restart, Harvick had planned to stay low on the track with the rookie Reed Sorenson to see if he could help him make a run to the front. "When the caution came out, we talked with Sorenson's crew chief to see what they were going to do," Harvick said Harvick. "They decided they were going to stay low and we were going to follow. But on the restart, it kind of jumbled everything up. At that point you know the pack is coming behind you. You're waiting 'till you think you can pull out and get in front of somebody's head of steam."
Harvick mentioned, "You know, you just kind of got to play your cards. You know the 8 and 81 aren't going to move, which you wouldn't expect them to move. If you were in their situation, you'd do the same thing. So we just kind of pulled out and hoped for the best."
Harvick was unable to pass Tony Stewart for the lead and would finish the Hershey's Take 5 300 in the second spot.
Clint Bowyer, Harvick's former REESE'S Racing teammate, finished 12th after starting sixth.
