Amick Comfortable, Fast In Busch Series Testing At Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Jan. 25, 2002) * When Lyndon Amick signed to fill the driver's seat vacated by the diminutive Bobby Hamilton Jr. at Carroll Racing, he had only one concern * leg room.

"That was an issue to start out with," joked Amick, who's about 6-foot-4. "That's the first thing I said to (crew chief) Todd (Lohse) after we signed the deal. I said, 'How big are your cars? I'm a pretty big boy. I've got to make some modifications to my cars.' But the same guy that was building their cars was building my cars. It worked out great."

So far, Amick is finding no problem pushing the acceleration pedal of the No. 26 Dr. Pepper Pontiac during the final two-day Busch Series test at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the season-opening EAS/GNC Live Well 300 on Feb. 16.

After posting the fastest speed on Thursday with a lap of 185.319 mph in the No. 26A Pontiac, Amick backed it up with more fast laps during Friday's session. Amick's No. 26A Pontiac posted the second fastest lap of Friday's session with a speed of 185.128 mph. Joe Ruttman was fastest with a lap of 185.943 mph.

The 24-year-old Amick, a native of Saluda, S.C. and a former NASCAR Goody's Dash Series champion, is thrilled about finding a home at Carroll Racing. Since 1997, Amick has ran a limited schedule in the Busch Series for Amick Motorsports while also competing in select NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and sports car events.

Amick assisted his father Bill in the running the family business, which continues to supply powerplants to five Busch Series teams including Carroll Racing. With his new job driving the No. 26, all Amick has to do is focus his efforts behind the wheel, which he says is a relief.

"I was the team owner's assistant," Amick said. "I went in there and helped manage (the team) for my dad. You're part of the deal. You're part of the payroll. You're part of it when the guys have got problems. You've got to handle all that. Now, I have concerns when guys have problems, but it's not my department.

"It doesn't matter to me what they make or what they do. All I am is a support role for these guys. I keep them pumped up and they keep me pumped up. It's what racing is about. The joy of racing is back to me. It's a great opportunity."

Amick loves racing at Daytona International Speedway. He became the youngest NASCAR winner in the history of the track when he claimed the victory in the Goody's Dash Series race back in 1996 at age 18.

Last year at Daytona, Amick ran several races during Speedweeks. He competed in the Rolex 24 At Daytona in the AGT class, he finished ninth in the Florida Dodge Dealers 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and finished 21st in the EAS/GNC Live Well 300 Busch Series race.

This year, Amick has simplified his schedule and will only race in the Feb. 16 EAS/GNC Live Well 300.

"I'm just going to concentrate on these guys," Amick said.

January testing is now complete. Next up at the Speedway is the 40th anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Feb. 2-3. Tickets are available for all Speedweeks 2002 events online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling the Speedway ticket office at (386) 253-7223.
