Burton Claims 27th at Dover
DOVER, Del. (Sept. 26) -- Saturday's Dover 200 at Dover International Speedway lived up to its new nickname, "the Bristol track on steroids." The same fender-banging action that goes on at Bristol Motor Speedway started early at Dover for REESE'S Racing driver Jeff Burton and 13 other drivers. On lap two of 200 Burton was hit from behind and was off the track for approximately 80 laps. He finished 27th.
The accident started when Paul Menard hit Matt Kenseth as the cars exited the second turn.
"I am not really sure what happened," Burton said. "I just know that someone hit me from behind. This type of accident is just something you can't avoid sometimes."
Burton knew he was going to need to use some patience moving through the field, but he never anticipated drivers around him losing theirs by lap two. While Burton was making progress through the field, Menard started a chain reaction, forcing the NASCAR officials to stop the race.
While Burton made the mandatory trip to the infield medical center, the REESE'S team made plans to fix the damaged REESE'S Chevy. The REESE'S Racing team could not start working on the car until the red flag was lifted. Once the NASCAR officials gave it the go ahead, the REESE'S Racing team went to work cutting away sheet metal and repairing the REESE'S Chevy to get it back on track to earn as many points as possible. Burton was cleared by the doctors and returned to the garage to survey the damage. Burton began helping the REESE'S team get the No. 21 Chevy back on the track.
The dedication of the REESE'S team showed when it was only one of four teams to get its car back on the track. The REESE'S team returned the No. 21 Chevy back to the track within 80 laps, and the REESE'S Chevy was running around the track just as fast as the leaders. Burton picked up nine spots and finished the race in the 27th position.
Ryan Newman won his fourth consecutive Busch Series race and Clint Bowyer finished second. Bowyer has only 26 points less than Martin Truex Jr. in the standings. Jason Leffler finished third, followed by Reed Sorenson and Greg Biffle, respectively.
The REESE'S team remains fourth in the team standings, 329 points shy of the lead.
Kevin Harvick and the REESE'S team will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 8, for the United Way 300 at Kansas Speedway. The NBC television network will begin its coverage at 2 p.m. EDT. MRN will produce the live radio broadcast.
