Liberty, SC (Wednesday, August 6th, 2003) - - ORTEC Motorsports with rookie driver Brent Moore had their first full taste of NASCAR Busch Series action as a team last Saturday night at Indianapolis Raceway Park, and the team was pleased with the results.
Moore, a former competitor in the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series was looking forward to the weekend, after spending most of the year as a crewmember, he was going to have a shot behind the wheel.
The teams only had one practice session, and the team knew that they had to make the best out of it. In a field of 46 machines, Brent posted the 38th quickest lap after posting a lap in 23.716 seconds or 104.132 MPH. "The car is good, but we're battling a handling problem right now, and the driver is still getting used to the track," he said.
Despite, the poor practice result, Moore was optimistic heading into time trials, but it proved to be another session of disappointed. Moore battled his No. 96 Chevrolet around the short track in 23.737 seconds amounting to a speed of 104.040 MPH, placing him 41st on the starting grid.
"The car is still not handling the way that we want it to, while we hate to be starting deep in the field, we are just excited about being in the show," Moore added.
The green flag dropped on the Kroger 200 shortly after 8:00pm EST, with Moore using patience while trying to gain positions in the pack. Moore knew that he may not have had a car to win, but he wanted to get some experience behind the wheel and bring the car home in one piece.
Shane Hmiel, who was setting a blistering pace caught up to Moore approaching lap 30 and put the former late model driver down a lap. The ORTEC gang kept their driver cool and calm while battling with the other lap machines and still trying to creep his way to the front.
"The car is not turning, the horsepower is here, but we're just too off," said Moore to his crew chief Tony Burgess.
In a race unexpectedly not filled with a lot of attrition, Brent kept on top of his game, gained valuable seat time and crossed the line 27th completing 193 of the scheduled 200 circuits.
"I'm happy with the finish, but I think we would have been a lot better if we had tested here before coming here today," said Brent, after the race.
Moore, who is completing in a limited schedule on the USAR tour in 2003, wanted to give a special thanks to his car owner and crew for their support all weekend. "I cannot say enough about this team, they all stuck behind me 150%, and we finished the race, that we our main goal," he added.
Brent Moore got some great news leaving IRP on Saturday night, as he was informed that he would get another shot to drive the No. 96 ORTEC Chevrolet in September at Richmond International Raceway. "I'm excited about going to Richmond, I think we'll do a lot of things different the second time around, and I think we'll have something to show them next month," said the NASCAR Busch Series rookie.
