Jones, Sadler pass second test

DARLINGTON, S.C. (Aug. 12, 1998) The second time around was a lot better for Buckshot Jones and Elliott Sadler Tuesday at Darlington Raceway.

After practicing at "OK" speeds on Monday, the two improved dramatically the second day, preparing for the track's classic Labor Day weekend (Sept. 4-6) events.

Sadler and Jones, both regulars in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division, will compete in Darlington's Dura-Lube 200 Presented by Bi-Lo on Saturday, Sept. 5. Sadler, however, will try to pull double duty and make his first NASCAR Winston Cup start in the 49th Pepsi Southern 500, Sunday, Sept. 6.

Sadler, 23, brother of fellow NASCAR Busch Series driver Hermie Sadler, was clocked at 163.104 mph, much better than his speed the day before of 160.705 mph. Jones, meanwhile, was also faster, posting a speed of 160.182 mph, just a tick quicker than his 159.145 mph Monday.

"We feel better today than we did yesterday," said the 28-year-old Jones, who pilots a Pontiac. "I think we'll be a contender for the race win. We really worked on race setup. I've had a lot of great coaching from people here at Darlington, including the best ever here -- David Pearson. I think it's time to use what I've learned."

Sadler says his team still has lots to "learn" before Bud Pole Award qualifying for both events on Friday, Sept. 4. He will return to the 1.366-mile oval Wednesday for yet another day of testing.

For ticket information to both the Dura-Lube 200 Presented by Bi-Lo and the Pepsi Southern 500, which could award a $1 million bonus to Dale Earnhardt, Mike Skinner, Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte or Mark Martin, call the Raceway at (843) 395-8499.
