CENTRAL CITY, Ky. (Dec. 14, 2000) NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division driver Kevin Grubb and officials of Swedish Match North America Thursday announced contracts that will keep the 22-year-old Mechanicsville, Va., driver in Brewco Motorsports' No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolets for the 2001 season. Grubb hopes to fulfill the potential team owner Clarence Brewer Jr. saw when he signed the 19-year-old NASCAR Late Model Stock Car sensation at the end of the 1998 season. Grubb will be teammates this season with NBS Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate Jamie McMurray of Joplin, Mo., who will drive Williams TravelCenters Chevrolets. Timber Wolf returns to Brewer's team for the sixth year.
"We are happy to continue the relationship with Swedish Match and Timber Wolf," Brewer said. "We are proud to have them with us as a marketing partner in the Busch Series. We appreciate their confidence in Brewco and our ability to increase their market share for their products.
"Our entire organization has developed a great relationship with the Timber Wolf representatives and is working hard to give them their first NASCAR Busch Series win. Brewco is proud to represent Swedish Match and Timber Wolf and looks forward to our best season yet in 2001."
Grubb has registered three top-5 and 11 top-10 finishes in his first two seasons with Brewco Motorsports, when he was teamed with another youngster, Casey Atwood. Atwood moves to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in 2001 with Evernham Motorsports.
Grubb set personal season highs in 2000 in races run, 31; top-5s, 2; top-10s, 6; laps led, 31; laps completed, 5555; and money won, $449,416. Grubb became the 44th different NBS driver to surpass the $1 million mark in career winnings in the series in 2000. His 13th-place finish in the final NBS points was also a career best.
"We're delighted to have Kevin driving the Timber Wolf Chevrolet again in 2001," Brewer said of his driver, who finished 17th in points his first season, with one top-5 and five top-10 finishes. "Kevin is a talented young driver who is right on schedule with our long-range plans at Brewco Motorsports. We feel that Kevin will be a contender in 2001.
"He's a fine young man who fits in well with our organization. It's Kevin's time to step up to the plate next year and be the man at Brewco Motorsports. We're all excited about a great 2001 season for the Timber Wolf team."
"I'm really looking forward to next year with the Timber Wolf racing team," Grubb said. "Terry (crew chief Shirley) and the guys have really worked hard building this team, and I'm excited about giving them and Timber Wolf their first Busch Series win.
"I feel like the 2001 season will be our best year yet. I'm proud to be associated with quality people like Brewco Motorsports and Timber Wolf."
"We have enjoyed a great relationship with Clarence Brewer Jr., Brewco Motorsports and the Busch Series over the last four years," said John Kenny, director of special events for Swedish Match North America. "This sponsorship program is the main reason that Timber Wolf has enjoyed tremendous growth. We are looking forward to the next two seasons.
"We believe that the Timber Wolf team is ready to take the next step toward winning races and battling for the championship. The team has made great progress in the second half of this season.
"Kevin continues to mature and gain confidence as a driver every week on the track. He is a talented young man and is a great representative for the Timber Wolf brands on and off the race track. He and the team have the skill and confidence to visit Victory Lane at any time."
The 2001 NASCAR Busch Series season will open with the NAPA Auto Parts 300 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 17. The 33-race schedule concludes with the Nov. 10 event at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Fla. -nascar.com-
