Driver title up for grabs as tour hits home stretch

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2003) -- Only one other cushion between the first and second place drivers has been closer in the history of the NASCAR Busch Series championship chase at this point in the season, and there's never been a more heated battle between first and fifth places.

So, whatever happens, stay tuned.

Brian Vickers (No. 5 GMAC Financial Services Chevrolet) scored his third win of the season Sept. 20 at Dover, and his second in the last three races. That finish also moved him atop the NASCAR Busch Series driver standings, by 32 points over Scott Riggs (No. 10 Nestle Nesquik Ford). Dale Earnhardt Jr. led Matt Kenseth by just 26 points with seven races to go in the 1999 season, the closest 1-2 margin at this point in the series history.

Text Box:

Ron Hornaday (No. 2 ACDelco Chevrolet) is third in the standings, 61 points behind Vickers. David Green (No. 37 Timber Wolf Pontiac) fell from first to fourth in the title chase after Dover and trails the leader by 67 points. Jason Keller (No. 57 Albertsons Ford) is fifth in the NASCAR Busch Series driver standings, 106 points behind Vickers. Any one of the top five drivers could find themselves leading after Kansas.

The 106-point separation between Vickers and Keller is the smallest in the history of the NASCAR Busch Series with seven races remaining in the season. For a closer look, reference the chart below:
