Harvick Scores 11th Top-Five Finish in Kansas
KANSAS CITY (Oct. 10) -- REESE'S Racing driver Kevin Harvick earned his 11th top-five finish of the year behind the wheel of the No. 21 Chevy by scoring a fourth-place finish at Kansas Speedway in a NASCAR Busch Series race.
"The REESE'S Chevy was a touch off all day," Harvick said. "We made some adjustments at the beginning of the race that really made the REESE'S Chevy tight. My team kept making adjustments, and by the end of the race we were pretty good. The most important thing today is that John Paul, my father-in-law, is doing better. If he wasn't, I would have stayed in North Carolina."
During Friday's practice sessions, Harvick shared the REESE'S Chevy with Richard Childress Racing (RCR) teammate Jeff Burton. Burton was standing by for the Busch Series race because Harvick returned to North Carolina to be with his father-in-law, who was hospitalized. Before leaving Kansas, Harvick qualified the REESE'S Chevy and earned the 19th starting position. Harvick returned to Kansas Saturday morning to qualify his Nextel Cup car and to run the Busch Series race.
At the drop of the green flag, Harvick was on the move through the field. By lap 35 of 200, he had the REESE'S Chevy in the top 10.
On lap 29 of 200, the second caution flag waved over Kansas Speedway. Harvick and the REESE'S Racing team decided to bring the No. 21 Chevy to pit road for its first pit stop of the day. The REESE'S team made a chassis and air pressure adjustment to help improve the car's performance. It also changed four tires and filled the REESE'S Chevy with fuel. Harvick returned to the track in the ninth spot.
"Happy" Harvick grabbed one spot on the restart and remained eighth for most of the race.
On lap 121, Harvick told the team that he was experiencing a bad vibration. The crew got ready in case Harvick needed to bring in the No. 21 Chevy for an unscheduled pit stop. As luck would have it, a caution flag slowed the field just one lap later. Harvick brought the REESE'S Chevy to pit road for service. Crew chief Ricky Viers called for an air pressure adjustment, four tires and fuel. Harvick restarted the United Way 300 in the 12th spot.
The field was slowed by six caution flags on the final 70 laps of the United Way 300. These caution flags made the pit strategies of the different teams very interesting. The REESE'S Racing team used the majority rule concept. If most of the leaders pitted, it was going to pit. If the majority did not pit, Harvick had enough fuel to finish the race.
On lap 181, the majority of the field pitted, and Harvick brought the REESE'S Chevy to pit road for the final pit stop of the day. The REESE'S team performed its fastest pit stop of the day, but not all the cars behind Harvick pitted. Harvick returned to the track in the 12th spot.
On the restart, Harvick moved into eighth place. By lap 190, he had moved up to sixth. On lap 194 of 200, Jason Leffler collided with Mike Wallace, invoking the 10th and last caution period. The race restarted with three laps left, and Harvick was able to advance two more spots.
Kasey Kahne won the event, followed by Greg Biffle, Johnny Sauter, Harvick and Jon Wood, respectively.
With its fourth-place finish, the REESE'S team cut the gap between it and Carl Edwards' team (third) in the Busch Series owner standings. Four points separate the two teams.
The REESE'S team will be back in action Friday, Oct. 14, at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The TNT television network will begin its coverage at 8 p.m. EDT. PRN will produce the live radio broadcast.
