Gordon Battles Penalties and Competitors in Kentucky
Huntersville, NC (June 21, 2004) - The Fruit of the Loom Racing Team could have used an NFL coach's challenge flag this weekend after NASCAR officials assessed Robby Gordon a pass through penalty due to a restart violation that occurred after the green flag waved at Lap 25 of the Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday. Running first in the field before the violation, Gordon accepted the penalty and moved back to the 36th position.
Qualifying fifth for the Meijer 300 without a single lap of practice time under his belt due to his conflicting NASCAR Cup Series schedule, Gordon looked to be well on his way to winning the first NASCAR Busch Series race of his career. However, Gordon's problems began after running over debris during the second caution of the evening at Lap 20 causing damage to the center valence of his No. 55 Fruit of the Loom Chevrolet. The damage was not significant enough to pit immediately and Gordon remained on the track poised for the restart.
The green flag waved and Gordon hit the throttle bringing him to the front of the field at Lap 25. However, it was determined by NASCAR officials that Gordon had accelerated too soon and was in violation of NASCAR restart rules.
Repairs to the damaged nose of Gordon's Chevrolet resulting from track debris earlier in the race would be made during his second and third pit stops of the night during yellow flag conditions due to the flaming wreck of Buckshot Jones at Lap 71. Fortunately for Gordon, he was the first car in the field that was one lap down resulting in the Lucky Dog award, putting him back on the lead lap.
By Lap 167 Gordon had come all the way from the back of the field to the seventh position with one of the best cars on the track. Gordon entered pit row at Lap 179 for his final stop of the evening for fuel and four tires. Bad luck struck again as the yellow flag waved with Gordon still on pit row, putting him one lap down for the second time.
Even though Gordon had one of the fastest cars in the field, he was unable to completely recover from the penalty and finished the Meijer 300 in the 12th position.
PIT NOTES
- Gordon is currently 13th in the NASCAR Busch Series point standings and is 629 points behind leader Martin Truex Jr.
- Gordon will not compete in the NASCAR Busch Series this weekend in Milwaukee.
