SHORT TRACK EXPERT LARRY PEARSON READY TO BATTLE AT SOUTH BOSTON
SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Of Larry Pearson's 15 career wins in the NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division, 14 have been on short tracks. "I always look forward to short track racing," Pearson said. "I favor them over every other kind of track because most of my successes in the NASCAR Busch Series have been on the short tracks." Pearson seems to excel on the short tracks, especially at South Boston Speedway. Of Pearson's 16 starts at the .4-mile oval, he has three wins, 10 top-five and 13 top-10 finishes. Among the active NASCAR Busch Series drivers, Pearson has the most wins at South Boston. "None of my wins came easy at South Boston," Pearson said. "In each race, I was always battling side by side with someone. The wins were very close, always coming down to the last lap to determine the winner. You are constantly in traffic because it is such a small track. It gets really congested because there's a full field of cars. Lap traffic always plays a major role." Pearson is looking forward to returning to South Boston for reasons other than his past successes there. "Most competitors started their careers racing on short tracks," Pearson said. "You would show up to the track, qualify during the day and race that same night. Each time I return to South Boston, it seems like the old days. I think the fans enjoy Saturnday night short track racing just as much as the drivers do."
Although Pearson has not been able to get to victory lane yet in 1999, he is very confident about his chances to make it happen at South Boston. "The track has been repaved since the last time I competed there," Pearson said. "I'm sure the track has changed a little, but it is still the same South Boston to me. When you have won somewhere several times, your confidence level and hopes are high each time you return to the track. "I've been to victory lane several times at South Boston and I have no reason to believe that I won't get there again this time. The Buckshot Racing team is ready for their first win of the season and I feel like our chances are extremely high at South Boston." The combination of Pearson's confidence and the Buckshot Racing team's experience makes them a serious contender for victory lane in the Textilease Medique 300 at South Boston on June 12, 1999. Larry Pearson's No.00 Pontiac is sponsored by Cheez-It snack crackers.
