Waltrip to field Aaron's Rent NBS program
By Dave Rodman
BROOKLYN, Mich. (Aug. 19, 2000) Michael Waltrip will be sponsored by Aaron's Rent for a majority of the rest of this season and next season. Michael Waltrip took advantage of a strong run in Saturday's NAPAonline.com 250 at Michigan Speedway to announce an expanded NASCAR 2000 NASCAR Busch Series schedule with new sponsor Aaron's Rent. Aaron's, the Atlanta-based company that currently sponsors Johnny Benson's Pontiac in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, will sponsor Waltrip for six of the remaining races this season and virtually all the events he does next year.
Band-Aid, which is Waltrip's sponsor for the balance of this season, will back him in the three remaining races as well as a select number of races next season, Waltrip said after driving the No. 7 Band-Aid Chevrolet owned by his wife, Buffy, to second place, only .192 seconds behind Todd Bodine.
Aaron's program with Waltrip will begin in next Friday's Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The 37-year-old driver will also drive the Aaron's Chevrolet in events at Darlington, Dover, Rockingham, Memphis, Homestead and "one other race."
"Next year we'll still be a Band-Aid car for some races -- I don't know how many," said Waltrip, who last won in the NASCAR Busch last October at Lowe's Motor Speedway. "They enjoy our relationship so we'll continue that as well."
"We actually put that deal together before the Cup deal came together," Waltrip said of the company's decision to back the former Tyler Jet Motorsports team and driver Johnny Benson for the balance of the NASCAR Winston Cup season. "We didn't really need to keep it under cover because when they decided to do the Cup deal everyone focused on that and wanted to talk about that."
Waltrip, who made his sixth NBS start Saturday, said running additional races would help his overall program, which includes his NationsRent Chevrolet ride in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
"I just want to get better," Waltrip said. "Yesterday, actually, was the culmination of what we've been trying to accomplish. I was more worried about making the race than I was making it -- I knew I could win it if I could just make it.
"Today was the culmination of a lot of hard work by the team and a lot of direction by me, explaining how it's gotta be. So, we go to Bristol and try to see if we can keep it up."
Waltrip said the public announcement for the Aaron's sponsorship would be held in the coming week. -NASCAR-
