Notes & Quotes
The Equipment... The Phillips 66 team will compete with "Chumley" this
weekend at Gateway International Raceway. "Chumley" made its last
appearance at Nashville Superspeedway in June, finishing 10th. The same
car also ran at Richmond, New Hampshire and Nazareth Speedway earlier
this year.
Been There Before...
Saturday's Charter Pipeline 250 will mark the first
time Casey Mears has competed at Gateway International Raceway in a stock
car, but not the first time he has raced there. Mears competed in
several Indy Lights Series events at the track; including a second-place
finish in 2000.
Casey Mears' Thoughts On Gateway International Raceway...
"It's a great
place to race because of the challenges it presents. Just because you
might be handling well in turns one and two doesn't mean the same will
apply in turns three and four. It very important that you get off turn
two well. When I was there with the Indy Lights Series in 2000, my
teammates and I finished 1-2-3. Unfortunately, I finished second, but it
was still a great day."
Crew Chief Donnie Richeson's Thoughts On Gateway International Raceway...
"The difficult part in preparing for St. Louis is the fact that turns one
and two are completely different from turns three and four. One and two
have a real tight radius with some banking and turns three and four are
more of sweeping corners with little banking. Having two opposite ends
can be an issue when trying to get a balance on the car you can live
with.
"Brakes also are an issue at Gateway because you carry so much speed around the track. When you dive off into turn one you have to be able to get the car slowed down to be able to negotiate the tight corner."
