Martin may set Mark with NASCAR Busch Series win at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 8) -- Mark Martin's NASCAR Busch Series victory April 5 puts him in position to become the division's all-time win leader at the Birmingham Auto Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare at Talladega Superspeedway April 26. Martin, a part-time NASCAR Busch Series competitor, recorded his 30th career victory in the division at Texas Motor Speedway, putting him one victory away from tying "Iron Man" Jack Ingram's 31-win mark. Martin is scheduled to compete in round 10 of the NBS at Bristol Motor Speedway April 12. "These Busch races are very competitive," Martin said. "We have had a lot of success and a lot of luck in the division. It's really great to be in a position to set the record. "Jack Ingram was one of the toughest competitors the Busch Series has ever seen. To be able to achieve something that he did really means a lot." Martin made his first NASCAR Busch Series start in 1982, but has run only one complete season. In 1987, he ran the entire 27-race schedule and scored the first three NBS wins of his career. He has won at tracks from Darlington to Orange County, a .375-mile track in Rougemont, N.C., in his career. He also has three Bristol trophies in his trophy case, but none from Talladega or its sister track, Daytona International Speedway. In fact, in five Talladega starts Martin never has been running at the finish of the 117-lap, 312-mile event. His best finishes are a pair of 27ths. "Talladega is one place we haven't had a lot of luck," said Martin, who has suffered from two engine failures and three accidents. "We have run well there, but just never finished well. "Last year we were running up front and we got involved in a crash. Sometimes things are out of your control. I think we would've had a good shot at winning last year, it just wasn't meant to be. "To win any of these Busch Series events, you've got to beat a lot of good competition. Randy LaJoie showed us all at Daytona and he'll be one to contend with at Talladega. Todd Bodine, Phil Parsons, Elton Sawyer...those guys are having great seasons and I expect them all to be a factor at Talladega." Martin is just one of a number of NASCAR Winston Cup drivers who will attempt to make the Birmingham Auto Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare. Busch Pole Award Qualifying for the Birmingham Auto Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare is scheduled for Thursday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m. Central time, when positions 1-25 will be set. Second-round qualifying to fill the field of up to 43 cars is scheduled Friday morning at 10:30 as part of Advance Auto Parts Qualifying Day. Both days of qualifying and practice are open to the public. Plenty of reserved tower grandstand seats remain for the Birmingham Auto Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare, scheduled for 12 noon Central time April 26. For tickets call the Talladega ticket office at (205) 362-9064.
