Martin leads as Charlotte testing wraps up
CONCORD, N.C. (April 29, 1998)
Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett, and David Hutto led the speed parade at Charlotte Motor Speedway Tuesday in the final practice session before the track opens in two weeks for Coca-Cola 600 month activities. More than 70 cars from various divisions were on the track during the final 14-hour session.
In preparation for the May 23 CarQuest Auto Parts 300, Martin was unofficially the fastest of 36 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division drivers testing. Martin posted the quickest lap time at 30.77 seconds, for an average speed of 175.495 mph. Fellow NASCAR Winston Cup Series regular Dale Jarrett was second fastest with a time of 30.88 seconds, at a speed of 174.870 mph.
Matt Kenseth was fastest among NASCAR Busch Series regulars, and third-best overall, taking his Chevrolet around the 1.5-mile oval in 30.94 seconds, for a speed of 174.531 mph. Jeff Burton followed close behind Kenseth with a 30.98-second lap, and Mark Krogh rounded out the top-five with a lap at 31.00 seconds.
Several NASCAR Busch Series drivers looking for speed found the wall instead. Kevin Schwantz hit in Turn 4 around noon. A blown oil line caused Chad Little, driving the Dr. Pepper Ford for Jimmy Foster, to hit the wall in Turn 2. Around 2:30 p.m., Blaise Alexander backed his car hard into the Turn 4 wall. Kelly Denton also made contact with the Turn 4 wall this afternoon. None of the drivers were injured.
Hutto posted the best speed among nearly 20 Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring, entries. NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division Results Pos. Driver Time Speed 1. Mark Martin 30.77 175.495 2.
