Racing in Milwaukee as Part of Double-Header Weekend
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (June 20, 2006) -- The city of Milwaukee, Wis., is most well-known for four things; Laverne and Shirley, Happy Days, Summerfest, and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. However, this weekend it will be known for the AT&T 250 NASCAR Busch Series race at the Milwaukee Mile. The ACDelco race team has had good luck in Milwaukee (Wis.) and is hoping their "Happy Days" will be here again as they fight the 43-car field in an effort to take the win on Saturday night.
This weekend is slated to be the toughest double-header for ACDelco driver Clint Bowyer. Bowyer will remain at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., until the completion of his first NASCAR Cup Series practice on Saturday morning, which ends at 10:15 a.m. Pacific. He will then head to Milwaukee (Wis.) in time to race the ACDelco Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS in the AT&T 250 at the 1-mile oval Saturday night.
Points of Interest...
* Inside the Numbers ... 9,376 -- the number of miles Bowyer will travel this weekend as he travels back and forth from his North Carolina home to Infineon Raceway and between Infineon Raceway and The Milwaukee Mile. 2,450 -- the approximate number of gallons of jet fuel it will take to make the commute from Sonoma (Calif.) to Milwaukee (Wis.). 4,358 -- the distance Bowyer and RCR teammate Kevin Harvick will travel from Infineon Raceway to the Milwaukee Mile and back as they commute between the Dodge/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race at Infineon and the AT&T 250 at "America's Legendary Oval." 469 -- the number of miles both drivers are expected to complete this weekend on the race track. Two -- the number of races both drivers are slated for.
What Ya' Haulin'...The Real Car Guys will take chassis No. 47 to the Milwaukee Mile. They have run this chassis three times this season. The ACDelco team qualified 16th and finished 21st at the Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) night race in April. They then started eighth at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and brought home a ninth place finish in March. Most recently, they qualified on the outside pole at Richmond International Raceway and finished fifth during the May night race.
Double Duty...ACDelco driver, Clint Bowyer will also be competing in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series event at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., for Richard Childress Racing in the No. 07 Jack Daniel's Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. He dropped two positions in the Cup point standings after his 39th place finish at Michigan International Speedway this past weekend and is now in 18th place and 745 points out of the lead.
Clint Bowyer on the Milwaukee Mile Double-Header...
What does it take to get around the Milwaukee Mile?
"It's a real flat track. It can be a real long night if your car isn't turning good. You really have to have a good handling race car that turns good in the center of the corner. If you can get it to cut in the center really good then you'll be pretty sporty throughout the race."
This weekend is going to be a little tougher on you than the first two weekends of traveling between the Busch and Cup Series races. How do you feel about what you are about to attempt in order to race in both series?
"This week is going to be the hard one, the first two were easier, especially Kentucky. We got to come in on Friday night and practice our cars. This week, we're just going to have to show up and race. We'll have to start in the back and race what we have -- you got what you got. Brandon Miller has done a really good job practicing the car and getting it real close, so hopefully he can do just that and we can race the ACDelco Chevy through the pack and see if we can't win the thing."
Now that you have completed two double-header weekends, do you think you will do it again next year?
"I don't know if I would do it again next year. It's something that I wouldn't be afraid of doing again. I think it's kind of fun. You get to rush to the helicopter, rush to the plane and you're in a big rush everywhere. But, hey that's all part of getting to live the dream, just getting to race that much more. That's the coolest thing about it is how much more you get to race. It's a good thing that Uncle Harvick has a fast jet so we can get to places pretty quick."
You are only going to get about an hour to recover from your flight from California to Milwaukee and then you have to race. How are you going to handle that?
"Racing is racing. Once you get out there, your adrenaline takes over and it doesn't matter. Usually when I'm tired I drive better anyway because I'm not all up on the wheel and I calm down in the car and run a lot better."
Being that you have been traveling back and forth so much on Kevin Harvick's plane, can you sleep very well on planes?
"Not as well as Harvick. He's good at it and sleeps with no problem. But more than anything we usually make fun of each other all the way there.
