Fedewa scores surprising Bud Pole
Shawn A. Akers
LOUDON, N.H. (July 11, 1998) After a disappointing 12th-place finish at Myrtle Beach Speedway last season, Tim Fedewa felt the track owed him something. He got it in the form of a Bud Pole for Saturday night's Myrtle Beach 250, the third Bud Pole of his NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division career. "We led a whole bunch of laps here last year and had a car that I thought should have won the race, but it didn't happen," said Fedewa, driver of the No. 33 Kleenex Chevrolet. "We got hung up in the pits on the last pit stop, so we didn't get a chance to get back up there. So, I thought this track owed us one." Fedewa led for 81 of the 250 laps a year ago. Elliott Sadler, the Bud Pole winner, wound up winning the 1997 event in record time. Fedewa, one of the final drivers to go out, had the advantage of a cooler race track. He toured the .538-mile paved oval at a speed of 98.816 mph. The lap was so good that he didn't attempt to make a second one. "I got real loose on the second lap," Fedewa said. "And I said there's no sense in running the second one because I had done everything but wreck. I had a nice, smooth first lap and I thought that it was good and that it would be in the top-15 or so. I had no clue that it would be a pole winner. "I was kinda disappointed in my first lap because I thought my second lap would be better and I didn't have a chance to make it. When I was told that I was on the pole, I thought they were joking. I guess we did it." Fedewa edged Curtis Markham, driver of the No. 64 Schneider National Chevrolet, off the Bud Pole. Markham, substituting for Dick Trickle, turned in a lap at 98.445 mph. "It was a real good lap for us, but so was Tim's," Markham said. "He did it on his first lap. I congratulate him. Our Schneider National Chevrolet, (owner) Dennis Shoemaker and all the guys have got the car running good. It's a pleasure to get in a car of the quality of the equipment they have and drive it. "They always put a good car under us. Dick Trickle always runs up front in this car, and I'm looking forward to running up front in it. I was really surprised at our lap because I was really sideways coming out of Turn 4 toward the start-finish line. I actually had to lift a couple of times to get it back under control. When they told me I had run that fast of a lap, I said, 'Whoa.'" Local favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr., who ran in the Late Model Division in recent years at Myrtle Beach Speedway, qualified third, followed by Randy Porter, Randy LaJoie, Elliott Sadler, Mark Green, Lyndon Amick, Joe Bessey, and Buckshot Jones. Porter posted the best Bud Pole Qualifying effort of his career. The Myrtle Beach 250 will be his final race in his No. 48 Unifirst Uniforms Chevrolet, as he plans to sell the team. "The cloud cover came in and that helped us," Porter said. "We came down here and was just hoping to make the race. After that first practice, the expectations grew a lot because we were quickest in that practice. We really weren't expecting that. "It's a new car, a new motor and all. We were really just hoping for a top-10. For a fourth-place position, that's my best qualifying effort ever. Everything today has been nothing but good." The top-28 positions were determined by time. Hermie Sadler, Mike Dillon, Scott Lagasse, Brian Smith, Jeff Krogh, Jason Jarrett and Mike Cope were awarded provisionals. Bobby Hillin, Blaise Alexander, Patty Moise, Jimmy Foster, Mark Krogh and Eddie Beahr failed to qualify.
