BellSouth Mobility 320 Friday Notebook By Brett Borden
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Apr. 2, 1999) Notes and quotes from Friday's action at Nashville Speedway USA, site of Saturday's BellSouth Mobility 320.
One of MRN Radio's two production trailers was involved in a traffic incident in Wyoming on the way to Seattle for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. The broadcasting company successfully scrambled to get the right equipment in place for the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race at Nashville Speedway USA.
MRN Radio sent an engineer to get some equipment off of the disabled trailer, then shipped it cross country to Nashville. Local company Pac-Van and Nashville Speedway USA provided necessary facilities and equipment to assist in MRN's production of the race.
Nashville Speedway President/Promoter Bob Harmon earned his own gold record in the Music City this year. Harmon celebrates his 50th anniversary in the motorsports industry this year, a career which began on the old beach road course in Daytona in 1949.
Harmon owned and promoted Montgomery (Ala.) Speedway for 17 years and Birmingham (Ala.) Speedway off and on for 10 years. He formed the All Pro Super Series in 1980, which merged with NASCAR in 1990 to form the current NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series.
Over the years, drivers such as Neil Bonnett, Bobby and Donnie Allison, Davey and Clifford Allison, Red Farmer and Jody Ridley all began their respective racing careers with and alongside Harmon. TNN announcer Eli Gold was an announcer for Harmon's All Pro Series during the early 1980's.
Billy Ray Cyrus is scheduled to sing the National Anthem for Saturday's BellSouth Mobility 320, while the Grand Marshall will be local high school librarian Fay Haines. Haines earned the honor through a local contest held by race sponsor BellSouth Mobility.
Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate Andy Kirby's return home to Nashville, where he spent eight years in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series, was successful as he qualified 32nd for Saturday's race. He was rookie of the year at the speedway in 1990 and points champion in 1997.
Kirby joins Coo-Coo and Sterling Marlin as the only three-time track champions at Nashville. Kirby's car, nicknamed 'Bob' by crew chief Dennis Adcock, was driven to a 4th-place finish at Nashville in 1996 by Jeff Purvis and driven to the Bud Pole and a runner-up finish last year by Casey Atwood.
Adam Petty only qualified 8th Friday afternoon, but his was the dominant car in the final practice before the race. The No. 45 Spree Chevrolet was fastest by almost a tenth and a half over Matt Kenseth. Bud Pole winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. was only 9th-fastest in the final practice. Outside pole sitter Marlin was 6th fastest.
Another prodigal son at Nashville is Jeff Green, who raced there for three years, winning the track championship in 1990. That year he won 16 out of 20 races. Green qualified the No. 32 Kleenex Chevrolet 18th for Saturday's race.
