DNF's continue to plague strong Compton runs

Nashville, TN (June 7, 2003) -- The letters DNF are a like a dirty word to a race team that aspires to win a points championship. DNF stands for "did not finish." The letters only appeared behind Stacy Compton's name three times during the 2002 season, but they have already appeared behind his name in the box scores five times in the first fifteen races in 2003. A late race engine failure prevented Stacy Compton from finishing where he deserved to finish at Nashville Super Speedway on Saturday. Compton and the Kingsford/Johnsonville crew rolled off the truck fast this weekend, posting the 2nd fastest practice speed before rain cancelled qualifying and happy hour. Compton started 15th and methodically worked his way into the top 7 by the race's halfway point. A lightning quick last pit stop moved him into the top 5, and he was in 4th place with 60 laps remaining when the engine expired.

A visibly frustrated Compton commented after the race, "We have to finish these races. We have had three top-five runs ended by mechanical failures this season. I know that everyone is working hard to improve our reliability, but we need to start capitalizing on nights like these when we have a car that's strong enough to win."

Scott Riggs won the race and cars that Compton was outrunning before breaking finished third and fourth. Crew Chief Steve Plattenberger observed, "The way things shook out at the end of the race, I think we should have finished third. Some of the teams we are racing hard for points had problems tonight and a top three finish would have moved us back into the top 10 in points. We will figure out why the engine didn't last and regroup for Kentucky next week."
