Stremme Qualifies Second But has Tough Luck at "The Rock"
MOORESVILLE, N.C., (February 23, 2004) --- Lady Luck finally caught up with TRIMSPA driver David Stremme at North Carolina Speedway this weekend. Stremme, who had an impressive run at Daytona International Speedway just one week ago, appeared poised for another top run in the Goody's Headache Powder 200. Stremme placed his X32 TRIMSPA Dodge on the outside pole for his second race at North Carolina Speedway with a lap around the 1.1-mile oval in 24.015 seconds.
"We had a great car all weekend," said Stremme, driver of the X32 TRIMSPA Dodge. "I came here for my first race with Braun Racing last fall and we finished in the Top 5. We were looking for more of the same here this weekend, and we had the car, things just didn't go our way"
Stremme visited with TRIMSPA spokeswoman Anna Nicole Smith prior to the start of the race, but even the presence of a supermodel in his pits could not change the luck of a mechanical malfunction during the race. From the drop of the green it was obvious that Stremme could be a contender for the win. The South Bend, IN native held his Dodge in the second spot for the first ten laps before radioing to his crew on lap 12 that he had lost power. After an extended stay on pit road, the TRIMSPA Team pulled the X32 Dodge behind the wall for repairs. The crew diagnosed the problem and scrambled to replace a faulty distributor.
"It is really a shame when such a small part like a screw on the distributor ruins your shot at a great run," said Stremme. "We are thinking of the big picture with the points, so it was important to get in as many laps in as possible. At that point we treated the race like a test session."
Stremme returned to the track on Lap 58, 56 laps down running in 42nd position. Back on track, Stremme easily ran as fast as the leaders. Stremme went on to log 133 of the total 197 laps, advancing eight spots and finishing in 36th position. "The good thing is that we can take this car to Las Vegas now and feel confident that it can run strong," said Stremme.
Though Stremme was out of the hunt, Braun Racing teammate Jamie McMurray was still competing for the lead in the No. 30 TRIMSPA Dodge. McMurray went on to earn the victory, the first for Braun Racing, sponsor TRIMSPA, and the fourth in a row for McMurray at North Carolina Speedway.
"I'm really happy for Jamie," said Stremme. "Braun Racing and TRIMSPA deserved a victory, it was great that both of our teams were there to celebrate. I just can't wait for my turn to bring one home."
Stremme and the X32 TRIMSPA Team will look to bounce back when the Busch Series visits Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Sam's Town 300 in two weeks. The race will be televised live on March 6, at 3:30 p.m. eastern time on FX and broadcast worldwide on PRN.
