Reed Sorenson took the lead with 33 laps to go to win the Wallace Family Tribute 250. It is rookie Sorenson's second career win.
Sorenson started second after qualifying behind Martin Truex, Jr. earlier Saturday evening. Truex led early but tire issues forced him out of contention for a race win. He finished 28th.
"I knew I had a great car. That last run we were just pacing ourselves because the track is pretty hard on brakes. We came in and got those last four tires - I was pushing it as hard as I could and we got a good lead there and the caution came out," Sorenson said.
"I tell you what, if I would have lost that race after that caution I would have been sick that's for sure - and probably literally. I did not want to see that caution. I was nervous."
Mike Wallace was second, the only Wallace brother to have a decent evening at Gateway. Despite leading briefly at the races midpoint, Rusty Wallace finished 37th, and Kenny Wallace, 24th.
"To come back to St. Louis, a place where I've always struggled, and run well in a race named in my family's honor, is very rewarding," Wallace said. "I spun the tires on the restart, I screwed up. I was so geared up and so excited; I just wanted to do too much."
Carl Edwards, David Green and Paul Menard complete the top five.
'It's kind of nice to be disappointed with third," remarked Edwards.
The Busch series point leader board tightens up with Sorenson's win. Truex leads Clint Bowyer by just 70 points. Sorenson, Edwards and Kenny Wallace complete the top five.
