Hines Swept Up in Late Race Crash; Finishes 25th at Talladega
Talladega, Ala. - Tracy Hines made his third career NASCAR Busch Series start at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend, and was challenging for a top-10 finishing position before being swept up in a late race crash that left him with a 25th-place finish.
"We were right there knocking on the door for a top-10 finish," Hines said. "The thing about that type of racing is you can move five positions either way in one corner. We were running good, but we just got swept up in someone else's mess."
Hines described a feeling of near helplessness to avoid a crash he couldn't see develop.
"It all started down below me, and I never saw it until it was too late," he said. "Even if I did see it, there wasn't anything I could do. You can't make radical moves in these cars at the speeds we are running, and we are all so close out there that even if you could, you'd take out someone else trying to avoid it.
"It was a real shame because we were right on schedule for the day, we were right where we wanted to be. It was a good day up until the end."
Hines is scheduled to make one more NASCAR Busch Series start for Tommy Baldwin Racing's Hungry Drivers program, the Cabela's 250 at Michigan International Speedway on August 21st.
Hines is scheduled to compete in four United State Auto Club events in the coming weeks. He will participate in USAC's annual "Border Wars", with back-to-back dirt sprint car event at Gas City I-69 Speedway and Eldora Speedway on April 30 and May 1 respectively. The next weekend, he will again race a dirt sprint car at Memphis Motorsports Park on May 7 before taking to the three-quarter mile oval at MMP the next day for the USAC Silver Crown race.
Hines' next appearance in the NASCAR Truck Series will come at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway, the weekend of May 14-16. Hines currently sits 22nd in NCTS point standings and is fourth in the fight for Rookie of the Year honors. The UAW/GM Ohio 250 is scheduled for live telecast on Speed starting at 2 p.m. on May 16. The race can also be heard live on affiliates of the Motor Racing Network as well as on NASCAR Radio, XM 144 on XM Satellite Radio.
