Robby Gordon Battles His Way to a Second-Place Finish

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (August 12, 2006) -- Robby Gordon came into Watkins Glen International with one mission -- to sweep this weekend's road-course races. Gordon would begin his charge in Saturday's Zippo 200 from the seventh position.

Quickly making his way through the field, Gordon was in third by the time the first round of green-flag stops began on lap 11.

It looked promising that Gordon would complete his goal even as the leaders, including the No. 7 Harrah's Chevy, spun through the gravel after Ryan Newman's engine let go and oiled down the track exiting the chicane. As the caution came out to slow the field on lap 29, Gordon came over the radio to announce that the car was still in great shape, catching a break and keeping hopes alive for capturing his third NASCAR road-course win.

By the second and final pit stop of the day on lap 44, Gordon was shown in second behind pole-sitter Kurt Busch. That is until the No. 39 of Busch had a miscue on pit road during his green-flag stop allowing Gordon to pass him to gain the lead.

Gordon would retain the lead until lap 69 when Busch passed Gordon in turn 1.

One of the best battles the Busch Series has seen in a long time would ensue, culminating in a last ditch effort by Gordon to pass Busch by going back to his off-road roots and attempting a pass through the dirt on the final lap. Unable to complete the pass, Gordon ended the day second.

"Today was a lot of fun," Gordon said. "We came here to win and we would do what it took to get to victory lane. I had issues with my transmission almost all day and that's what eventually allowed Kurt (Busch) to pass us going into turn 1. I did all I could to get back in the lead there at the end. We knew where we had him beat and I just stuck my nose in there and leaned on him and just didn't get in deep enough.

"A win would have been great, but we still are going to have a lot of momentum going into tomorrow's Cup race and hopefully can finish one better and get a victory for Jim Beam and our other great sponsors."

Gordon and the No. 7 Jim Beam Chevy will take on the Nextel Cup Series drivers in today's AMD at the Glen. Catch coverage of the AMD at the Glen at 1 p.m. EDT on NBC. Radio coverage can be heard on national MRN affiliates beginning at 1 p.m. EDT.
