TREVOR BAYNE, No. 99 Out! Pet Care Toyota Camry, Diamond-Waltrip Racing
Finished: 3rd
What adjustments did you make on the race car during the event?
"I was definitely a little worried there on that first long green flag run. We were just way too tight in the center of the corner. At the beginning of the run we would be free in, but we just had to kind of ignore that to get it freed up in the center. The run before the last one, we were really, really strong, but we went a little too far there at the very end so I didn't have anything for those leaders. Really excited about this run we had today. That was awesome to get a top-three here with these new cars. Everybody at our shop has worked their butts off to get these new cars right and they were that way when we unloaded. Just a great run for this Out! Pet Care Toyota."
What happened on the final restart?
"That was a pretty cool restart there. Everything just played in our favor, God was watching out for us and got us through that corner without getting tangled up. It could have happened pretty easily. We went down into that turn one and everybody just scattered and it was like the seas parted and the hole opened up and we got to second all of the sudden. That was pretty cool, it put us in position to finish up third here I think."
How was your race car tonight?
"I was pretty worried there at the beginning. We got really tight in the center and started dropping back pretty quick. We fell back to about 25th at one point and that had us scared. They did a great job just freeing up the car in the center. One thing I learned tonight is that you can't worry about entry in these cars. All day I was like, man, I'm a little free in and I wonder if we can fix that. You just have to give that up to where you can get through the center of the corner and off. We finally did that at the end. The car was under us at the end. I think Ryan Truex and the 00 team fought the same thing as we did and by the end they kept making the same changes and both of our cars came to us. We had a really great restart at the end. I think we were sitting about sixth or seventh and we came out of turn one and two in second and that kind of put us in position to be up there for the top-three in the end. I can't say thanks enough to those guys who have been working on this new car for us. We unloaded on Thursday and that thing was so good. Everyone at Diamond-Waltrip Racing just is working their butts off to get these cars right. We didn't have to make many changes. Also, Out! Pet Care, we've had a lot of fun with them so far this year with all their competitions. We had a dog on our deck-lid again this week so that's an every week thing and it's pretty cool."
What do you think of the new Nationwide Series cars?
"I really like these new cars. I actually like the way they drive a little bit better than the current style cars. I know my current style car might not be as good as Brad's (Keselowski) so he would probably disagree. Like I said earlier, everybody at our shop has put so much time and effort into these cars, they've built all brand new race cars for two teams - myself and Ryan (Truex). We've got four cars sitting there ready to go and not a lot of teams can say that. I love the way they drive. I had to get used to that free-in, but that's something we're going to have to learn for the progression to the Cup cars. I like what they're doing with the Truck Series and the Nationwide cars and the Cup cars, just making that progression where you can get used to that feel and it's going to help our learning curve for the future. I think these Cup guys can attest more to that because I've never driven a Cup car at these tracks. I definitely like what they're doing with it. Like the way they drive, like the way they look and the adjustability, it's there. When they started with the Cup cars and the COTs, there was no adjustability and everybody was just terrible. These cars, they've designed them in a way that you can adjust on them and you can make them better as the race goes on."
