TOYOTA TIDBITS -- July 20 - 26, 2009
Here Are the Headlines:
Busch Earns Ninth Toyota NNS Win
Camry Drivers Celebrate Centennial
Familiar Territory for Speed and Papis
ORP Memorable Moment
Shaw Makes NASCAR Debut
NINE IS NICE: Camry driver Kyle Busch earned Toyota's ninth NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) win of the year in Saturday night's race at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis. Busch, driver of the Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) No. 18 Camry, started ninth and led five times for 90 (of 200) laps en route to his sixth series win of 2009. The win enabled Busch to extend his lead to 212 points over second-place Carl Edwards in the NNS championship point standings. Busch has now finished first or second in seven consecutive NNS races.
CAMRY DRIVERS CELEBRATE CENTENNIAL ERA: This year, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) is celebrating the centennial era of racing at the historic 2.5-mile oval. Many current Camry drivers have memories of racing at the historic track, including Michael Waltrip, who has started all 13 Brickyard 400 Sprint Cup races at Indianapolis. Some current Camry drivers even have memories of other races in which they have participated at the speedway. Robby Gordon and Max Papis have both competed in the 'Greatest Spectacle in Racing' -- the Indianapolis 500 -- and rookie Scott Speed has driven in the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
NOT BRICKYARD STRANGERS: When Speed and Papis start this year's Brickyard 400, they will become only the 14th and 15th drivers to compete in two major races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. While Speed is a rookie to the Sprint Cup Series, he has made two previous starts at Indianapolis. Speed competed in a pair of United States Grand Prix Formula 1 races prior to moving to NASCAR in 2008. Speed finished 20th in 2006 and 13th in 2007. Papis is competing in a limited number of Sprint Cup races in 2009, but has raced in two Indianapolis 500s in his career. Papis finished 23rd in 2002 and 14th in 2006.
WIN NUMBER ONE: Jason Leffler's win in the 2007 Nationwide Series race at ORP was the first victory for the Toyota Camry in NASCAR competition. Heading into this year's Nationwide Series event, Toyota drivers have won back-to-back events at O'Reilly Raceway Park (ORP). Camry driver Busch is the defending race-winner, having led 197 of 200 laps at the Indiana short track en route to victory lane a year ago.
GO GIRL GO: Nineteen-year-old Caitlin Shaw will make her NASCAR debut in Friday's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race, driving the No. 1 Red Horse Racing Tundra. Shaw, who is from Albuquerque, N.M., will become the second-youngest female to ever compete in the series -- just weeks shy of the record set by Tundra driver Chrissy Wallace in 2008. Shaw, a student at North Carolina's Belmont-Abbey College, has driven USAC Midgets and competed at short tracks in North Carolina.
