Small to come from 24th in MIS NNCTS go.

Brooklyn, MI: Jason Small will start the Sunbelt Rentals/Lucas Oil Products Chevrolet from the outside of row 12 in the Michigan 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at the Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. NASCAR officials canceled qualifying after two brief, but strong, rain showers dampened the 2-mile Irish Hills oval during what would have been NCTS practice. The field was set based on current 2002 NCTS owner's points.

While qualifying was rained out, Small and the rest of the NCTS teams did have the opportunity to participate in two 45-minute practice sessions for tomorrow's race. In the first session, Small set a fast lap of 43.360 seconds/166.052 mph, which was good for 22nd on the time sheet. In the second session, Small timed in at 43.222 seconds/166.582 mph, which moved him up one spot to 21st on the chart.

"We are fairly happy with how the day went," Small said. "Obviously, we would have liked to have had that practice that was rained out, but it shouldn't be that bad of a deal. No one had any practice, so it isn't like we are at some sort of disadvantage."

In fact, Small is not at a disadvantage at all. In fact, he has one ace in the hole that no one else in the field has: real-time race experience at MIS this season. Small participated in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series event at Michigan International Speedway in June.

"The cars and the trucks handle quite a bit differently, but it is nice to have almost 400 miles of experience here in race conditions. I am a rookie, but I come here knowing what to expect as the race goes on. I think I have a pretty good handle on what the track will do as we get some laps on it. It would have really hurt me today with the rainout if I had not had the previous experience here. I was able to get out and get in my rhythm really quick and find the line I wanted to run. Without that experience, I would still be looking for it."

Small and the rest of the NCTS drivers are set to get the green flag in the Michigan 200 just after 1 pm ET on Saturday. The race will be shown live on ESPN and heard live on XM Satellite Radio and MRN Radio Affiliates nationwide.
