HORNADAY, JR. BECOMES THE 10th DIFFERENT NCWTS KENTUCKY POLE WINNER
SPARTA, Ky. - Ron Hornaday, Jr., became the 10th different NASCAR Camping World Truck Series pole award winner in Kentucky Speedway history by claiming the top spot on the "Built Ford Tough 225 Presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers" starting grid with a 173.383-mph (31.145 seconds) lap this afternoon.
The 2006 Kentucky NCWTS race winner and three-time series champion took his second straight and fourth pole award of the season. He will make a bid to become the first repeat NCWTS Kentucky race winner and shoot for his third consecutive win this season when he leads a 36-truck field to the green flag tonight at 7:18 p.m.
Hornaday, Jr., owns three victories and a total of six top-five and nine top-10 finishes through 11 events. He will make his 12th top-five start of the season with a 76-point championship lead over second-place driver Matt Crafton.
Today's pole winning run is the third quickest in series track history, but didn't threaten the series track qualifying record of 178.141-mph (30.313 seconds) set by Bill Lester on July 9, 2005.
"I was really surprised to put that lap down," Hornaday, Jr., said after showing 20th on the speed chart when his No. 33 truck wiggled during the first of two runs. "We didn't make a qualifying run yesterday and that just says a lot about Rick Wren and everyone on the Longhorn Chevrolet team."
The veteran earned his second straight 10th-place NCWTS Kentucky finish last season and will share tonight's "Built Ford Tough 225 Presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers" front row with second-year driver Brian Scott, who turned a 173.344-mph (31.152 seconds) circuit in his No. 16 Albertsons Toyota.
Scott was second in the series opening practice here yesterday with a 170.004-mph (31.764 seconds) lap and 13th in final practice with a 169.364-mph (31.884 seconds) lap. He ranks sixth in the championship standings after taking his first NCWTS win at Dover International Speedway May 30 along with a total of four top-five and six top-10 finishes. He brings a string of two top-three finishes into tonight's 225-mile battle. He started 23rd and finished 32nd in last season's "Built Ford Tough 225 Presented by the Greater Cincinnati Ford Dealers."
"We focused on qualifying runs in the first practice session yesterday and our times were really good. We focused on race trim in the second session and stayed in the top 15 when most everyone else was in qualifying trim. We feel like we have a great shot tonight, our times in race trim were competitive and close to the No. 33," Scott said.
ARCA RE/MAX Series "Click It or Ticket. Buckle-Up! Kentucky 150" qualifying is next on the track at 6:30 p.m.
